Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries seeks applications for a Bibliographic Assistant VI at the Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary. Reporting to the Collection Services Librarian, the Bibliographic Assistant VI supports general and special collections maintenance for over 750,000 volumes, including a periodical and serials collection of more than 1,400 print and electronic titles. The incumbent also provides support to Special Collections Reader Services and is responsible for the training, oversight, and review of student assistants.


The Bibliographic Assistant VI utilizes the acquisitions and cataloging modules of the ILS to support bibliographic control of complex collections, maintain statistics, conduct inventories, and assist with a range of preservation and digitization projects.

Test: Language tests will be given the day of the interview.


Responsibilities

  • Serials and periodicals check-in (receiving and claiming).
  • Serials and monographs record maintenance (general and special collection).
  • Preservation activities, including binding of periodicals, routing materials for replacement or conservation treatment, (re)housing in enclosures, routing brittle books for reformatting, monitoring and gathering environmental data, and assisting with a pest management program.
  • Stacks maintenance for special collections, including shifting volumes, labeling materials, and shelving ranges.
  • Paging and re-shelving special collections materials for research visits.
  • Providing support for special collections reader services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Working bibliographic knowledge of at least one research language for the study of religion and theology required (Latin, German, Hebrew, Greek, French, Spanish)
  • Experience with special collections
  • Experience with ILS
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Ability to create and edit spreadsheets (e.g., Excel)
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent patron service within a diverse working environment
  • Demonstrated experience with office productivity and database tools (e.g., MS Excel)
  • Demonstrated aptitude with recent library and/or other computer technologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A./M.A in the humanities or religious/theological studies preferred
  • 1-2 years library experience in technical services or collection management preferred
  • Latin and/or German strongly preferred
