The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks an exceptional individual with executive-level engineering experience, excellent interpersonal capabilities, and an empowering leadership style to join the organization as the new Associate Vice President, Facilities Engineering.
Reporting to the Vice President for Facilities, Operations & Planning, the Associate Vice President of Facilities Engineering is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus facilities and the physical plant on the Medical Center campus. The Engineering Department provides steam and chilled water to campus buildings totaling approximately 3,900,000 total square feet including an extensive research portfolio to include wet research labs, animal facilities, BSL3, ABSL3, Biobank, NMR, Cryo Electron Microscopy, housing, and clinical spaces. Responsibilities include: HVAC operations, utilities distribution, engineering & project commissioning, campus preventive maintenance programs, utilities procurement and monitoring, energy conservation programs, fire safety systems, vertical transportation contract maintenance and code compliance. Working closely with the AVP for Planning and Capital Projects, the incumbent will oversee the project engineering of campus infrastructure improvements related to NYC Local Law 97 mandates as well as the department’s infrastructure renewal plans guided by existing life cycle analysis.
The Associate Vice President will build and maintain effective relationships with all campus constituents and work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Engineering Department’s unionized workforce and management structure, other campus offices and departments, key administration, faculty, and staff to ensure the effective use of resources. The Associate Vice President also represents the organization as a primary liaison for all matters related to engineering, including external constituents, local building departments, the community, and other outside agencies interfacing with CUIMC.
The search is being conducted due to the continuous advancement of the institution and the desire to ensure the physical environment continues to champion the clinical, research, and educational prowess of the organization.
Responsibilities
The Associate Vice President, Facilities Engineering is responsible for:

▪ Engineering & project commissioning
▪ Campus preventive maintenance programs
▪ Utilities procurement and monitoring
▪ Energy conservation programs
▪ Fire suppression and safety systems
▪ Vertical transportation contract maintenance
▪ Code compliance
▪ Maintenance contracts
▪ Project engineering associated with the capital renewal program
▪ The management of the facilities to include the operation and maintenance of the physical plant
▪ Daily operations of the physical plant, assuming total responsibility for performance
Minimum Qualifications
▪ A bachelor’s degree required; Engineering-related preferred;
▪ Minimum of 10+ years related experience;
▪ Extensive knowledge of building operations, distribution systems, steam & chilled water production plants, demonstrated managerial and human relations skills, labor relations experience, and significant experience in large and complex facilities environments;
▪ Knowledge of BMS computer-based systems and software applicable to physical plant operation is strongly preferred;
▪ Proven management development and leadership skills, experience in identifying deferred maintenance and long-range project/financial planning, and strong oral and written communication skills required;
▪ Experience with building systems commissioning required;
▪ Experience in healthcare-related facilities or heavy research environments strongly preferred;
▪ A customer-focused attitude and a track record of innovation in service, the use of management systems, and the implementation of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, new technologies in mechanical systems and utilities areas;
▪ Proven knowledge of work order management systems. Experience with Maximo a plus.
▪ Utilization of cutting-edge trends and tools, including AI, to increase the effectiveness of maintenance and engineering systems.
▪ An established record of progressively responsible positions in the field as well as a demonstrated ability to lead professional staff effectively;
▪ Strong communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
▪ Master’s degree in engineering preferred
▪ Professional Engineering (P.E.) license strongly preferred
