Position Summary

The Center for Radiological Research is seeking a technician to work with a group of scientists to study cutting-edge, high throughput protein assays to measure biomarkers and the immune response in blood cells after x-ray exposure. The program is highly multidisciplinary, encompassing the fields of biology, biochemistry, immunology biophysics and statistics

Responsibilities

 An enthusiastic and committed technician will need to demonstrate proficiency in recruiting human patients to the study, working with protein assays and immunofluorescence techniques applied to human blood samples (cells and plasma). A team player with strong organizational skills, experience with basic laboratory techniques and knowledge of biological sciences is required. He/she will perform assay protocols according to standard operating procedures that include setting up experiments for the radiation exposures of blood samples, carrying out fully planned experiments and data organization, and keeping data records. Along with the team, he/she will maintain good laboratory practices. Working under supervision and independently, he/she will assist in design of experiments and protocols and perform and gain experience in a variety of techniques including Meso Scale Discovery multiplexed bioassays, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. Full training will be provided for all protein bioassay techniques that are used to measure protein biomarker levels in freshly collected and previously biobanked human blood samples. The primary work location will be at the Center for Radiological Research at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, NY.

Responsibilities

• Follow protocols carefully under the supervision of the Pl and other team members.
• Perform protein quantification in blood samples; prepare solutions; setup and calibrate equipment; and carry out fully planned experiments.
• Receiving calls from potential blood donor volunteers; posting flyers for recruitment.
• Reaching out to potential blood donor volunteers to plan a time for recruitment and blood collection.
• Collect samples and keep records of results.
• Assist with ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned and/or necessary to the functioning of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, immunology, biochemistry or related science or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  

Preferred Qualifications

Some laboratory experience is preferred, especially familiarity with cell culture techniques and biological assays.

Other Requirements

Must have general knowledge of biology, protein assays and cell biology.
