Position Summary
The Advising Dean of Preprofessional Advising provides advising to CC/SEAS undergraduates and alumni in their preparation for and application to graduate programs in the health professions (medical school, dental school, veterinary school, etc), law school, and business school. The Preprofessional Advising Dean serves as a supplemental advisor to all students interested in these pathways from first year through alumni. They guide students to resources to help them to explore these paths, develop and deliver programming related to preparing for selective application processes, liaise with CSA advising deans and faculty regarding individual student issues, and represent the office to internal and external constituencies.
Responsibilities
Serve as a member of the Premedical Advisory Committee, whose duties include advising applicants on all phases of their preparation from choosing courses and extracurricular activities to applying for research and obtaining clinical exposure, culminating in guidance through the professional school application process. The Advising Dean will be given an individual premedical advising load each year and will conduct portfolio reviews, consult on school lists and write the Columbia Letter for each of their advisees
Advise students and alumni on all aspects of the application to law and business school. Advising will take the form of individual appointments, email correspondence and group information sessions. Share responsibility with other preprofessional staff for writing law school dean’s certifications and Bar certifications
Assist in planning and facilitating special programs for preprofessional students/alumni including personal statement, application and interviewing workshops as well as guest lectures, alumni events and visits from professional schools
Assist in developing and maintaining content for website, and listservs, as well as presentations
Represent the Office of Preprofessional Advising at campus-wide initiatives including Days on Campus (Admissions yield event), New Student Orientation Program, Family Weekend, and other events throughout the year
Work collaboratively with other Columbia offices including the Center for Career Education, Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, Alumni Affairs, Office of Global Engagement, and Admissions, and Athletics, providing information about preprofessional content and developing joint programming when appropriate
Assist in maintaining preprofessional data within Salesforce; analyze data for trends and make recommendations for improvement/enhancements based on this analysis
Research and publicize extracurricular, internship and post-baccalaureate opportunities of particular interest to preprofessional students/alumni
Serve as a resource to preprofessional student organizations
Assist in managing mock interview program for prehealth students; train and orient new mock interviewers and conduct hour long mock interviews for students applying to professional schools
Maintain knowledge of Columbia curricula as well as professional school application processes, keeping up with changes so as to be most prepared to be a knowledgeable resource to students and alumni
Other duties as assigned
As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Council of Ivy Group Presidents (Ivy League), it is imperative that members of the Columbia University community, in all matters related to the intercollegiate athletics program, exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to NCAA, Conference, University, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations
