The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

This live-in position reports to the Executive Director of Residential Life (RL) and supports RL and Undergraduate Student Life (USL) function of Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The Director leads  Fraternity and Sorority life (FSL), including the residential population, providing vision and structure for Fraternity & Sorority Life at Columbia .The Director supervises FSL staff and collaborates with offices to provide a comprehensive leadership curriculum. The Director ensures students are aware of rules and regulations serves on the emergency and response team; and monitors the budget for FSL. The Director stays informed of best practices, assesses and responds to the needs of the evolving Fraternity & Sorority community. The Director of FSL also assists in providing leadership across Residential Life.  As an essential staff member, the Director also may be required to respond to emergencies outside of their on-call duties.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee FSL advising, recruitment, and programs for the Inter Greek Council as well as the Multicultural Greek Council, Inter Fraternity Council, and Panhellenic Council. Implement programs that promote community, scholarship, leadership and service. Work closely with alumni, students, staff, and faculty, in assessing the needs and outcomes of a values-based FSL program. Responsible for incorporating emerging trends within FSL.
  • Collaborate with Housing to monitor residential spaces; support students' efforts to maintain their assigned living space; keep Housing informed of student transfers in and out of the FSL community. Conduct walkthroughs of spaces with Housing and Facilities staff. Advocate for the residential needs of Fraternity & Sorority Life.
  • Supervises a full-time Assistant Director and Residence Hall Director, with indirect oversight to Resident Advisers (RA). Participate in RA recruitment, selection, training and development. Meet regularly with residents to address student concerns.
  • Oversee the ALPHA Standards of Excellence program supporting chapters in their academic success, leadership development, philanthropy, community service and chapter management.  
  • Review policies as they relate to behavioral expectations and risk management. Work with relevant campus partners such as Student Conduct and Title IX  on disciplinary matters related to FSL members. Set policies and procedures as they relate to the IGC Judicial Board. . Consult with appropriate personnel at Barnard College (BC) and General Studies (GS) when issues arise with BC or GS students.
  • Serve on the emergency response team, including being on call and responding to and following up on incidents; coaching staff who serve as first responders; contacting other staff around emergencies including maintenance emergencies, health and mental health crises, assaults, and police activity; and when appropriate notify parents and guardians.
  • Responsible for working with the Alumni Affairs offices to create and facilitate programs that promote student alumni interaction. Work with relevant alumni organizations, advisors, and the national fraternity and sorority organizations. Educate FSL student leaders about their respective chapter's national standards and policies. Serve as University liaison to Chapter National Adviser and Alumni Adviser.
  • Liaise with Columbia Health, Alumni Affairs, Athletics, Housing, Dining, and Public Safety regarding issues pertaining to FSL. Create and implement on-going training for RL staff, ensuring compliance in regards to university event management policies and procedures.
  • Work in conjunction with USL staff to support and develop leadership programs; design and implement training for student organization leaders; enhance existing leadership programs. Collaborate to develop campus-wide advising policies and procedures.
  • Serve on Cross-Functional work teams for USL regarding leadership training, programming, advising, new student orientation etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum of four years of progressive and related experience in student group advising required (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Strong adherence to best practices, including AFA core competencies.
  • Must have knowledge of residential living as well as knowledge of leadership development theory.
  • Must have strong communication skills with young adults, be able to work well under pressure and maintain composure, and experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion essential.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions that can have a great impact.
  • Must have well-organized administrative capabilities.
  • Computer literacy required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education or Student Personnel Administration or related field preferred.
  • Experience with substantial depth and breadth in Fraternity and Sorority Affairs preferred.
