Position Summary

The Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a highly-motivated full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) to work in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU). The CTICU NP will work under direct supervision of the ICU intensivist to provide specialty care to critically ill cardiothoracic patients following various cardiac surgeries.

Responsibilities

I. Provide direct care to critically ill inpatient pain medicine patients through the following activities:

• Take comprehensive history and perform physical examinations.
• Perform diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures in accordance with training and scope of practice.
• Develop differential diagnoses.
• Evaluate and treat on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results, pursuant to the practice protocols and collaborative practice agreement.
• Initiate subspecialty consultations and referrals.
• Counsel and educate patients and their families.
• Document all patient encounters in the electronic medical record.
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

II. Participate in daily team rounding, periodic M&M sessions and department conferences/teaching opportunities.

III. Participate in the continuing education programs and departmental quality assurance, risk management, and compliance efforts

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Nursing as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), plus five years of nursing related experience.
• ACNP or AGACNP board certification.
• Current New York State Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Registered Nurse (RN) licenses.
• AHA BCLS certification.
• AHA ACLS certification.
• Eligible for DEA certification.
• Knowledge and proficiency with computer-based programs such as electronic medical records systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.
• Previous Nurse Practitioner experience.
