Position Summary
The Lung Biology Laboratory within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a Technician B to support ongoing research investigating lung biology and immunobiology. The successful candidate will assist with laboratory experiments, animal colony maintenance, data collection, and general laboratory operations in a collaborative research environment.
The incumbent will be trained in a variety of research techniques, including precision-cut lung slice technology, live-tissue confocal microscopy, protein purification, liposome preparation, flow cytometry, and core molecular biology methods such as PCR, Western blotting, and ELISA. The Technician B will also assist with the maintenance of IACUC protocols and support the preparation of scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and other research-related documents. Candidates with strong organizational, communication, and scientific writing skills are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Assist with studies on live lungs and precision-cut lung slices using live confocal microscopy and tissue micropuncture techniques.
- Prepare proteins and other laboratory reagents.
- Maintain and breed transgenic mouse colonies and maintain related records.
- Collect, organize, and present research data.
- Learn and perform data analysis techniques.
- Assist with laboratory operations and ensure compliance with laboratory protocols and safety procedures.
- Support the preparation of scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and regulatory documents.
- Collaborate effectively with faculty, trainees, and laboratory staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or related science or equivalent in education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or research experience in biology, immunology, physiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with standard laboratory practices and research environments.
- Experience working with mouse models and animal research procedures.
- Experience with confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular biology techniques, and biochemical assays.
- Experience with scientific or technical writing.
