Position Summary
The Center for Radiological Research is seeking a technician to work with scientists studying the health hazards and antimicrobial efficacy of ultraviolet light. The technician will be part of a research team exploring the use of ultraviolet light to inactivate avian influenza virus to improve biosecurity on poultry farms.
Responsibilities
The technician will be trained to conduct a variety of wet laboratory protocols including viral and bacterial culture and assay techniques. The technician will also be trained to use ultraviolet exposure equipment. A portion of the duties for this position will need to be performed in a Biosafety Level 3 facility so the applicant should be comfortable working with the required safety protocols and personal protective equipment necessary for that facility.
The technician will work independently to conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and prepare reports. This team member will present updates at regular group meetings and will also have the opportunity to attend and present at relevant conferences. The technician will be expected to complete scientific and technical tasks in a timely fashion.
The primary work location will be at the Radiological Research Accelerator Facility at the Columbia University Nevis Laboratories in Irvington, NY. Occasional work at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City will be required.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biomedical engineering or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Laboratory experience with viral quantification assays. Experience working in a BSL 2 or BSL 3 laboratory
Other Requirements
Must have general knowledge of cellular and molecular biology. Must be proficient with aseptic cell culture techniques. Must be able to work within a biosafety level 3 facility while wearing personal protective equipment such as a respirator.
