Position Summary

The Allergy & Immunology and the Gastroenterology Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases Program seek an eligible Technician to work on a full-time basis. The laboratories use advanced techniques in mouse genetics, 3D organoid culture systems generated from human samples and mouse tissue as well as human pluripotent stem cells. Research will be conducted on both molecular mechanisms of reactive epithelial changes in pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and associated diseases as well as the genetics and immunopathology of inborn disorders of the immune system, with the ultimate goal of identifying pathways relevant for the diagnosis and treatment of both rare and common allergic and immunologic diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conducts research in understanding the pathophysiology of pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and discovering novel biomarkers and drug targets for EoE and associated diseases as well as the genetics and immunopathology of inborn disorders of the immune system, with the ultimate goal of identifying pathways relevant for the diagnosis and treatment of both rare and common allergic and immunologic diseases.
  • Formulates research hypotheses, designs and conducts experiments, implements statistical analyses for the successful completion of related research projects.
  • Organize labs and projects (maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies, prepare stock reagents, management of lab expenditures).
  • Maintain mouse lines (colony maintenance, genotyping, mating, administering treatments to genetically modified mice to induce esophageal inflammation).
  • Dissect mice to isolate tissue-specific protein and mRNA that will require analysis by RT-PCR and western immunoblotting, and isolation of tissue and cells to be set in sections for histopathology and immunofluorescence staining and viewed by bright field and confocal microscopy.
  • Culture cells (2D and 3D culture systems) using mouse cell lines and primary cells.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and data documentation, including coding and cleaning data forms, and data entry and tracking.
  • Participates in weekly work meetings and works in a collegial and cooperative manner with the PI and other co-workers.
  • Understands current scientific literature and can participate in laboratory discussions using knowledge.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with the research team, and clinical staff, and acts as a wet lab research resource.
  • Help facilitate multidisciplinary and multi-site research as needed.
  • Work with senior level staff (i.e. administrators, directors, chiefs, clinicians) at research study sites to negotiate/implement/monitor research protocols.
  • Provides assistance and coordination to various lab research projects.
  • Attends study team meetings and trainings.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of related experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred.
  • Experience in stem cell and epithelial cell biology and/or human development and disease.
  • Experience in conducting research experiments/projects.
