Position Summary

A position is available in the Celiac Disease Center at the Department of Medicine at Columbia University for a highly motivated research technician. Reporting to the Director of the Celiac Disease Center, Peter H.R. Green, MD, the candidate will provide assistance to the principal investigator and researchers, supporting clinical, translational, and basic scientific research on patient-derived specimens. Specific duties include maintaining a tissue biobank, collecting patient samples, performing scientific experiments, and analyzing data.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and log participant samples and clinical information.
  • Maintain the sample database and lab notebooks following standard operating procedures.
  • Isolate lymphocyte fractions from intestinal biopsy and peripheral blood samples.
  • Perform cryopreservation/cryorecovery of isolated lymphocytes; cell culture; ex vivo immunoassays; and flow cytometric analysis of lymphocyte populations.
  • Organize and compile results for presentation.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, physics or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • High level of interest in biomedical research.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; detail-oriented.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with flow cytometry, cell sorting, tissue culture, and molecular biology.
  • Experience in a Cell Biology/Immunology laboratory.

Other Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made
  • Participation in the medical surveillance program

  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
