Position Summary

University Life is a central division that cultivates an inclusive, connected University community across Columbia’s campuses and 17 schools. We serve as a hub for student engagement, cross-school collaboration, and coordinated University-wide initiatives that strengthen the student experience. Our work is grounded in building trusted relationships across the institution so that students can access the resources, opportunities, and support systems they need to succeed.

We strive to ensure that every Columbia student experiences a deep sense of belonging and community, empowering them to have a meaningful impact at the University through their relationships, contributions, and engagement. Guided by our core values of connection, integrity, respect, service, and continuous learning, we are committed to creating environments where students feel welcomed, supported, and equipped to succeed throughout their academic journeys.

Through close collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, University Life champions a Columbia defined by inclusion, community citizenship, and holistic support. We work toward a Columbia where every student can grow, connect, and thrive.

The Center for Student Success and Intervention (CSSI) uses a 360-degree lens to approach student support work, including student conduct, intervention case management, and student support initiatives. CSSI incorporates supportive measures for students with more significant needs, including students managing academic and behavioral issues, students of concern, and students with unmet basic needs. CSSI is responsible for connecting students to the support that they need to overcome challenging situations, and also oversees the University's student conduct investigation and adjudication processes. Student Support and Intervention, in accordance with the expectations of students at Columbia University, upholds the highest standards of respect, integrity, and civility.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Conduct in the Center for Student Success and Intervention (CSSI), the Student Conduct Specialist is responsible for working in collaboration with the Associate Director to respond to reports of academic and behavioral misconduct across the Columbia University community. The Specialist conducts Dean’s Discipline Hearings in a manner that holds students accountable, while promoting learning and development. The Specialist also works in collaboration with staff members across the Columbia University community to facilitate alternate resolutions including mediations and restorative justice measures. The Specialist is also responsible for supporting various CSSI outreach and educational initiatives.

The Specialist determines outcomes for the Dean’s Discipline process in collaboration with their Associate Director, and as necessary may implement sanctions ranging from disciplinary warning through suspension. Case dependent, the Specialist may attend meetings in collaboration with the Associate Director to communicate case outcomes to faculty and other University staff.

  • Alternate Resolutions. Collaborate with other departments throughout the university to implement alternate resolutions, including mediation and restorative justice measures, to issues adjacent to the Dean’s Discipline process.

  • Case Administration. Oversee administrative tasks related to onboarding of incidents for Dean’s Discipline cases. This includes confirmation of receipt of reports, gathering materials for case investigations, and interviewing reporting parties when additional information is needed.

  • Appellate and resolution support: Assist in maintaining appeal documents, ensure appeal deadlines are met, communicate with students and campus partners about outcomes and next steps as directed.

  • Other duties as assigned

As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Council of Ivy Group Presidents (Ivy League), it is imperative that members of the Columbia University community, in all matters related to the intercollegiate athletics program, exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to NCAA, Conference, University, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations.
