Position Summary

Located 20 miles north of Manhattan in Irvington, NY, Nevis Laboratories is Columbia University's primary center for the study of high-energy experimental particle and nuclear physics. Faculty members, postdoctoral research scientists, and graduate students, supported by an engineering and technical staff, prepare, design, and construct high-energy particle and nuclear experiments and equipment.

The Research Staff Assistant will be working in a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment under the direction of the PI. The incumbent will provide technical support for our work on the ATLAS Experiment, one of the two main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

This position is based at Nevis Labs, located in Irvington, NY.

This role is subject to grant funding.


Responsibilities

  • Testing electronic instrumentation being developed for the readout of the ATLAS calorimeters.
  • Maintaining data acquisition software used in the test stands and setups developed for the ATLAS readout electronics.
  • Maintaining data analysis software required to precisely measure the performance of the ATLAS readout electronics.
  • Performing the data review required to determine the performance of the ATLAS readout electronics.
  • Attending working group meetings.
  • Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in a scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in a research environment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics.

  • Experience with Python, C++ and Root.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain high confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organization skills.

  • Self-starter, a fast learner who can work independently under limited supervision.
