Position Summary

The Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Midwife to join our Midwife Fellowship Program. The fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive clinical training, mentorship, and professional development while preparing fellows for independent practice in an academic medical center.

The Midwife Fellow will gain clinical and administrative experience across multiple divisions within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inpatient and Outpatient Midwifery, Urogynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Family Planning, and Integrated Women's Health.

Clinical responsibilities include providing compassionate, patient-centered obstetric and gynecologic care under the guidance of experienced physicians and certified nurse-midwives. The fellow will complete patient evaluations, obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform routine obstetric and gynecologic assessments, develop care plans, provide patient education, and coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams. The Midwife Fellow will also assist attending physicians and certified nurse-midwives during office visits, procedures, and other clinical activities while progressively assuming greater clinical responsibility throughout the fellowship.

The goal of the fellowship is to provide the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience necessary for the Midwife Fellow to independently manage a panel of patients and confidently transition into full-scope midwifery practice by the completion of the program


Responsibilities

Patient Care Management and Documentation

  • Deliver patient-centered care under the supervision of experienced physicians and senior APPs in Women’s Health.
  • Conduct comprehensive gynecological and obstetric assessments, including routine prenatal care, family planning, and menopause management.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as Pap smears, IUD and Nexplanon management, endometrial biopsies, and colposcopies.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients with chronic conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, and other gynecological disorders.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients on reproductive health, contraception options, prenatal and postpartum care, and menopause management.
  • Advocate for women’s health and wellness through patient education, community outreach, and participation in health promotion activities

Professional Development:

  • Attend and actively participate in didactic sessions, case conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Engage in scholarly activities including research projects and quality improvement initiatives.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with physicians, other APPs, nurses and staff to provide holistic and coordinated care.
  • Build a referral network across the medical center to serve patient needs ensuring seamless coordination with other specialties.

Direct Patient Care

  • Work collaboratively with providers and the multidisciplinary care team to provide high-quality, comprehensive, patient-centered obstetric and gynecologic care.
  • Track lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow up.
  • Act as a resource for patients requesting lab results and requisitions.
  • Triage patient phone calls and make clinically-related follow-up calls.
  • Use EMR and optimize EMR functions with IT.
  • Medication/supply tracking/expiration date follow-up.

Quality Assurance

  • Conducts review of patient records in collaboration with peers and physician colleagues to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided.

Patient Safety

  • Administers care in accordance with safety, environmental and infectious control principles and regulations identified by the institution and legislative bodies.
  • Practices in accordance with legal parameters as delineated by collaborative agreement/practice protocols to include ordering and/or administering medication, intravenous fluids, blood and blood products.

 Patient Rights

  • Demonstrates an awareness and knowledge of patient’s rights and responsibilities while receiving care within the institution.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the referral mechanism when a patient believes these rights have been violated.

 Education

  • Serves as a resource person and participates in staff development programs.
  • Provides patient education and counseling on health status and treatment plan.

 Research Studies

  • Assists staff in developing appropriate quality improvement study design for potential use in research.
  • Participates, when appropriate, in quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in approved research protocols. 
  • Evaluates and implements relevant research findings.

 Coordination/Collaboration

  • Collaborate on clinical problems with nursing personnel, medical staff or other health care providers.
  • Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team to determine and achieve health goals of patients and families.
  • Collaborates with administration and professional staff in the establishment and implementation of community services.

 Other Job Duties

  • Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families and staff.
  • Acknowledges cultural differences that exist among staff and patients.
  • Identifies customer services needs on the unit.
  • Participates in departmental staff meetings and committees as required and appropriate.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent in education and three years of related experience.  Educational clinical experience can count towards this requirement.
  • Master’s Degree in specialty of practice or completed alternative certification requirements for graduates of Nurse Midwifery to April 1, 1989.
  • Current NYS Midwifery Licensure
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to direct work, drive change, interact with and effectively collaborate with patients and co-workers.
  • Must maintain licensure throughout employment.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and be detail oriented.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and strong observation and listening skill
  • High level of professionalism and maturity, and the ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-4 years of related experience.
  • Computer proficiency with the ability to quickly learn new applications
