Position Summary

The Laboratory and Technology Programs  Manager at the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Columbia University is responsible for the management of the Biomedical Engineering Department Teaching Laboratories, as well as the shared department equipment and laboratory operations tasks. The position reports to the Director of Finance and Administration and works in close cooperation with, and is under operational supervision of, the lead faculty of the Teaching Lab.


Responsibilities

  • (50%)Teaching Laboratory Programs & Instructional Support:

    Support faculty and teaching staff in the implementation of teaching lab and design course activities

    Assist in preparing, setting up, and breaking down laboratory sessions

    Provide hands-on support to students with equipment use, prototyping, and basic fabrication techniques

    Assist with Senior Design projects by providing technical guidance and logistical coordination

    Maintain inventory, order supplies, and ensure lab readiness for instructional use

    Help ensure instructional spaces are operational and aligned with course needs

  • (20%) Laboratory Operations & Management:

    Manage day-to-day operations of the teaching laboratory and machine shop

    Assist with scheduling, equipment usage, and general lab coordination

    Help maintain equipment and coordinate routine servicing and repairs

    Follow established procedures for lab operations and safety compliance

  • (15%) Student Support/Shared Equipment & Research Laboratory Support:

    Provide guidance to student workers and students in lab settings

    Assist in training students on basic equipment and lab protocols

    Support oversight of student activities to ensure safe and effective lab use

  • (10%) Shared Equipment & Research Support:

    Assist in maintaining and tracking shared equipment usage

    Provide  technical support to faculty, researchers, and students

    Support equipment training and troubleshooting under guidance

    Assist with tracking expenses and maintaining records

  • (5%) Administrative & Compliance Support:

    Assist with purchasing, recordkeeping, and documentation related to lab operations

    Support compliance with university policies and safety procedures

    Help coordinate lab access and respond to routine operational requests

    Coordinate departmental compliance with EPA, OSHA, and University EH&S requirements

    Serve as departmental EH&S liaison

    Support laboratory inspections, documentation, and safety training

    Serve as departmental liaison for space requests from central, SPA/SPF, compliance, and Dean’s Office


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience required
  • At least two to four years of related experience.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills, teamwork and communication skills, ability to teach/work with students.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously 
  • Innovative and a self-starter.
  •  Experience in managing a lab in a relevant technology area; Knowledge of and experience in machine shop operations.
  • Working knowledge of confocal imaging/instrumentation
  • Skilled in the proper handling of biological explants, animal and human cells, and electromechanical devices, or the ability to acquire such skills rapidly on the job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in biomedical engineering or related engineering discipline.  PhD additionally preferred.

  • Some teaching experience (teaching assistant experience included)

  • Understanding of basic financial and budgeting processes

  • Experience in coordinating activities in a lab in higher education, supervising and providing educational support to students
