The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources the HR Generalist serves as the first point of contact for employees of The School.  With independent decision making the incumbent performs a wide range of Human Resources services with moderate complexity and participates in various HR projects. Interacts with all levels of management and staff regarding a variety of HR issues, responds to employee inquiries and interprets University policies appropriately. Working closely with the HR Director, the incumbent partners with academic and non-academic directors/managers on all aspects of the recruitment process, including temporary staffing, onboarding, and offboarding of full-time staff. In addition, partners with the HR team members on department-focused projects.  In collaboration with the HR Director, the incumbent is responsible for the delivery of short-term and long-term programs that promote positive Employee Relations.

*This position is 5 days in person, with flexibility in the summer months.


Responsibilities

  • Under minimal supervision and acting with a high degree of independence, the incumbent conducts a variety of tasks associated with the recruitment, screening, and selection of new employees. Reviews recruitment requirements with management to determine applicant requirements. Formulates plans to meet staffing needs. In addition to RAPS postings on Columbia’s Careers website, develops advertising campaigns by preparing copy for classified employment advertisements, determining ad placements.

     

    HR and Payroll Administration

    • Oversees the payroll administration and provides front-line HR guidance for all employees at The School at Columbia (TSC). Ensures that TSC HR related programs, decisions, and transactions are carried out in accordance with Columbia's policies and procedures and provides advice to departments and management regarding the interpretation and application of HR related policies and procedures. Alongside the director, the incumbent manages day-to day HR affairs including appointments, template-based hiring when necessary using PAC ensuring accurate processing; Advises and consults with departmental leaders on operational decisions; facilitating the development of departmental systems or protocols that promote HR strategy and ensure various Columbia University policies and procedures are followed.

     

    Employee Recruitment and Training

    • Manage hiring and appointment processes for all categories of employees, including assisting hiring managers to develop positions, write job descriptions, request appropriate salary levels, implement recruitment plans, enforce EOAA policies, conduct searches, and select final candidates. Implement procedures for hiring, appointing, orienting, training, and developing employees in conjunction with CUHR. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Drafts offer/rejection letters for sign-off by the Director of Human Resources  With direction from the HR Director, the incumbent manages the reappointment process for Officers of Administration.  Ensures all information is accurate and processed in a timely manner. Completes reference checking of offered applicants

     

    Records Maintenance and Compliance

    • Maintain personnel and payroll records, including time and attendance information, appointment data, and other personnel information in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Standardize employee documentation and ensure confidentiality of all HR information. Provide information to employees and senior administration as needed, including changes in employment status, benefits-related information, and other pertinent communications. Maintain organizational chart and job description information for TSC. Participates in the collection, analysis, and presentation of employment data metrics relating to advertising effectiveness, turnover, diversity and inclusion, and related items as necessary. Compiles and updates PAFs, new hires, reappointments, salary and title changes, and upgrades Alongside the director, the incumbent  manages day-to-day HR affairs including appointments, template-based hiring when necessary using PAC ensuring accurate processing
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the HR Director

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA degree or equivalent.
  • 2-4 years minimum related experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Working understanding of human resource principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Google suite
  • Proficient with online virtual technologies, such as Zoom, Google Meet, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources.

  • Previous experience working in a school, higher education, or academic environment.
