The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Emerging Technologies, the Emerging Technologies Analyst has a passion for products and technology and the ability to research and synthesize information effectively and quickly. They will serve as a technical analyst for all new and emerging technologies, events, workshops and information sessions organized by the Emerging Technologies team at CUIT. The Emerging Technologies team is part of Academic and Research Services at Columbia University IT. A fast-paced, startup inspired group that develops extremely innovative solutions to some of the most challenging problems in higher education and research, through highly engaged partnerships with internal and external organizations.
The ideal candidate will be the following:
- Researcher - You are an intellectually curious individual that is always in 'information gathering' mode. You can drive top-down requests as well as build foundational knowledge that can be used later during presentations.
- Technologist - You will need to build a deep understanding of a broad range of technologies and are able to pick up new technologies quickly. You may not have a degree in a technology field but demonstrate a clear passion for the area.
- Executive Communicator - You must be able to summarize and present information in a concise, yet thorough, manner. Communications vary widely and include formal emails, written papers, ad-hoc technical demos, and formal presentations.
- Project Manager - You will own and drive research investigations and projects to conclusion with little guidance.
The successful candidate will be highly intelligent, insanely curious and have an unbridled thirst for figuring out new technologies, and innovative approaches to solve hard problems.
Responsibilities
- Analyzes the technology landscape and utilizes technology to improve workflows and processes.
- Assists in planning, implementation, assessment and outreach related to emerging technologies.
- Manages multiple emerging technology projects across disciplines at Columbia University.
- Utilizes design thinking methodology to meet the needs of stakeholders.
- Assist in recruiting, motivating and managing full time employees and students.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
- Minimum 3-5 years’ related experience.
- Define and conduct ongoing research for various products and emerging technologies.
- Provide concise and high-quality written documents and executive summaries on current and emerging technologies.
- Create and confidently present presentations and live product demonstrations.
- Effectively manage short- and long-term projects to a successful conclusion.
- Visit build and maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise.
- Maintain an online knowledge base for ongoing research.
- Act a resource for co-workers regarding emerging technologies.
- Ability to independently learn and demonstrate new technologies in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to translate complex technical terminology, concepts and issues in terms understandable to technical and non-technical management and staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
- Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise.
- Work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.
- Precise and attentive to detail is essential.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to work weekends and off-hour work on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience researching complex topics, preferably with respect to products, services, or technologies.
- Demonstrated interest in, or experience with, a range of technologies including AR/VR, education technology, robotics, AI/ML.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts concisely.
- Strong time/project management skills and the ability to make good trade-offs with little guidance.
- Exceptional collaboration skills.
- Familiarity with a programming language (e.g., Python) is a benefit, however you will not write code as part of this position.
- Experience in product development is a benefit.
- Knowledge of traditional and digital marketing, content marketing, and social media marketing
