Position Summary

The Business Manager is responsible for the day-to-day business operations of the Columbia Law Review. The incumbent works closely with the Board of Trustees of the Columbia Law Review, the Faculty Director, the Director of Business Operations, senior administrators, Law Review students, as well as alumni/ae.  Supports the Review’s 100+ student staff and oversees and manages the Review’s endowment and budget (both accounts receivable and payable).  The position reports to the Faculty Director, Law Review Board of Trustees, and the Director of Business Operations.

Responsibilities

Publication Responsibilities:

1. Oversees all aspects of publication of the Columbia Law Review, including the publication of 8 issues each academic year, posting the articles to Columbialawreview.org, and publication of the Review’s semiannual newsletter; verifies and approves publication schedules with the Managing Editors and the Editor-in-Chief; serves as liaison between the printer, authors, research databases (such as Westlaw and Lexis) and students.
2. Manages the writing competition for approximately 150 first-year law students; the Transfer Writing Competition, and the Publishable Notes Program.  Maintains the confidentiality and integrity of the entire process. Responsible for planning the orientation for the new-second year staff members and for 30 third-year Administrative Board members.  Meets regularly with student staff to provide administrative support and institutional knowledge. 
3. Manages print on-demand online store with the publisher; coordinates the fulfillment of back issues contract; files with the U.S. Postal Service. Also functions as Permissions Editor, evaluates and responds to requests for permission to reprint excerpts from the Columbia Law Review, acts as liaison with the Copyright Office. 
4. Plans and acts as host for the annual banquet for student staff members, alumni/ae, faculty and authors. Supervises selection of the banquet speaker and toast master, invitations, and menu. Assists with planning of annual Symposium, student retreat, book parties, recruiting events, membership selection, Bluebook invitation with Harvard, Yale and UPenn, and other activities.
5. Manages the Review’s web site, ensuring that timely and accurate updates are made to the page with the publication of each new issue. 

Business Responsibilities:

1. Administers all responsibilities related to the day-to-day financial operations of the Review, such as reconciliation of various statements, annual signing and filing of certification of officers and corporate resolution forms, budgeting for all student and business office expenses. Has signature authorization in all areas of financial management. Assists in managing the Review’s multi-million-dollar endowment. Works directly with the Review’s Finance Committee and brokers to manage and transfer funds. Oversees monthly recurring investments for the endowment and monitors maturation of endowment certificates of deposits and ensures that all investment actions directed by the Finance Committee are accomplished in a timely manner.  Provides all financial documentation to the accountant during annual audit and throughout the year.  Provides guidance to students to ensure that annual monetary donations and in-kind donations are handled appropriately. Liable for the Review’s financial reports and tax returns. Works directly with various officers at Citibank. Facilitates an efficient management of the Review’s finances. Acts as Corporate Secretary and Treasurer for the Directors of the Review, Inc. (a separate corporation within the University) and in this capacity organizes board meetings, writes and supervises preparation of reports for meetings, and records the minutes of same.  
2. Manages and maintains the office space that the Review leases, consisting of 5 floors within William Warren Hall. Makes sure that repairs are made in a timely manner and oversees renovation projects. Acts as deputy borrower for the Review, and interfaces with circulation personnel from all Columbia University libraries. Purchases all equipment, office supplies and furniture for the Review. 
3. Hires, trains, and supervises casual support staff as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

• B.A. and four to six years of related experience.
• Supervisory or management experience needed.
• Incumbent must be detail-oriented, organized, and possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
• Must be literate with computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet knowledge, and QuickBooks. 
• Must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a professional and poised manner. 
• Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment.
