Position Summary

Cardiac 3D Printing Program utilizes patient-specific 3D models derived from imaging scans to improve surgical planning and outcomes. The engineer will create patient-specific 3D models of hearts to help surgeons understand intricate anatomy and plan complex repairs for congenital heart defects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform segmentation to create and optimize 3D digital and printed models from medical imaging data (CT, MRI, echocardiography).
  • Operate and maintain 3D printing technologies, including material selection and post-processing.
  • Lead simulation efforts for surgical training including optimization of physical models to mimic vascular tissue.
  • Develop and utilize patient-specific cardiovascular models to conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that inform clinical decision-making.
  • Use state-of-the-art CFD software (e.g., Fluent, SimVascular) to simulate and analyze blood flow through patient-specific cardiovascular anatomies.
  • Apply computational modeling, engineering analysis, and numerical methods to address clinical challenges in cardiac patients.
  • Design and conduct benchtop experiments to complement and validate computational modeling and device development efforts.
  • Perform statistical analysis of experimental and simulation results to support research and clinical applications
  • Assist in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) for hemodynamic studies.
  • To work with the 3D lab manager collaboratively to engage in innovative directions for the 3D lab.
  • Improve workflows for segmentation, model generation, and quality assurance.
  • Support research initiatives and contribute to academic presentations, publications and grant proposals.
  • Train other engineers, technologists and researchers on 3D modeling software and printing techniques as needed.
  • Research and assist with the preparation of intellectual property filings as needed.
  • Conceptualize, design and develop new medical devices and technologies including surgical and catheter devices, 3D modeling and simulation techniques in collaboration with the team.
  • Design and conduct benchtop experiments to complement and/or refine designs and validate computational modeling studies as part of the development process.
  • Work collaboratively with cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, and clinical teams to obtain patient data, understand clinical needs, and refine modeling and device design.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science; plus 4 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working with clinical teams in a hospital or research setting.
  • Prior experience in cardiovascular modeling or congenital heart disease applications.
  • Programming experience (Python, MATLAB, or C++) for automation and data analysis.
  • Use state-of-the-art CFD software (Fluent, SimVascular, etc.).

Other Requirements

  • Experience with 3D segmentation software (Mimics, 3D Slicer, Materialise, etc.).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, MeshLab, Blender, etc.).
  • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies (SLA, SLS, FDM) and materials.
  • Knowledge of medical imaging (DICOM) and analysis techniques.
  • Experience with computational modeling (CFD, FEA) is a plus.
