Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director, Assessment and Faculty Development, the Associate Director, Faculty Assessment and Development. will support the School of Professional Studies by developing metrics to assess instructional effectiveness, interpreting their results, identifying areas for improvement, and supporting faculty in their development as instructors and researchers . As a foundational member of the Faculty Assessment and Development team, the Associate Director of Faculty Assessment and Development will be charged with measuring the impact of faculty development programming on instructional practices as well as leading and overseeing pedagogical workshops and teaching forums.

The Associate Director will be a major stakeholder in the formation of policies around faculty assessment, particularly with part-time faculty, and will work closely with Academic Affairs leadership to implement these policies. The Associate Director will research best available assessment instruments, adapt existing instruments, and create new instruments when necessary. The Associate Director will need to be a strong collaborator and team player who prizes collegiality and can work effectively with a diverse staff.


Responsibilities

Faculty Assessment

  • Oversee semesterly data collection, cleaning, coding, and distribution of student evaluations to academic programs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with institutional stakeholders to improve student evaluation response rates to student evaluations through strategic messaging and incentives.
  • Analyze student evaluations to identify instructional trends and areas for improvement.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director of Faculty Assessment and Development, develop and refine instruments for measuring instructional effectiveness, incorporating instructor reflections and student feedback.
  • In partnership with the Senior Associate Director of Faculty Assessment and Development, create and implement a holistic and comprehensive framework for assessing part-time faculty, ensuring inclusivity and feasibility across the institution. Pilot the framework in specific programs and oversee its institution-wide implementation. 
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Faculty Affairs to align faculty assessment practices with school policies, generating detailed reports and data to support faculty reviews and promotions. 
  • Work closely with faculty members on classroom assessment, maintaining the utmost confidentiality in all interactions. 
  • Assist faculty with utilizing assessment results to improve student learning and pedagogical practices.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director for Faculty Assessment and Development, present on assessment services and opportunities for engagement to programs and programmatic staff.
  • Implement an evaluation structure for the Pedagogical Lab and Faculty Fellow Initiative, and conduct research on its impact.

Faculty Development

  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director of Faculty Assessment and Development, build, design, and facilitate workshops covering essential topics related to teaching and learning; spearhead the development of new workshops as requested by academic programs.
  • Regularly consult with faculty at SPS on their instructional performance, including student learning outcomes, pedagogical approaches, and fostering inclusive learning environments.  
  • Conduct observations of faculty using preset protocols, and provide actionable feedback to faculty on those observations
  • Provide targeted and actionable feedback to instructors based on the results of their course evaluations and instructor reflections. 
  • Research, develop, and disseminate resources on evidence-based pedagogical ‘best practices’ that can support faculty and programs at SPS; deliver these resources through teaching forums as well as through teaching tips.
  • Contribute to the field of teaching and learning in higher education through venues such as conference presentations and publications.
  • Develop and deliver training for program evaluation, survey design, interviews, and other professional development needs.

Research support and production

  • In collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs, provide in-kind research support for faculty.
  • Utilizing familiarity with research methodology, assist faculty with applications for internal grants and assist with the grant review process.
  • Contribute to the field of teaching and learning in higher education through venues such as conference presentations and publications

Instructional Quality Assurance

  • Develop data tables, dashboards, and metrics to track attendance at faculty development events and measure faculty engagement, using this data to improve future programming.
  • Design and implement surveys, interview protocols, and focus groups in order to determine faculty needs and satisfaction, aiming to enhance faculty development initiatives.

Perform other duties and projects as assigned or requested; manage special projects as assigned, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to emerging needs.

May be responsible for supervising the work of one (1) or more employees.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree desirable.
  • 4 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in social sciences, education, research/statistics, or related field.
  • Familiarity with the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with assessment in higher education.
  • Experience with program evaluation.
  • Teaching experience at the higher education level.

Other Requirements

  • Experience with educational assessment.
  • Experience in designing and implementing instruments that provide direct and indirect indicators of student learning.
  • Strong knowledge of research design, quantitative analyses, and qualitative analyses.
  • Strong proficiency with Qualtrics or other survey software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders across multiple units within an institution/organization.
  • Ability to work with faculty across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under time pressure.
  • Must be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Motivated, independent, and creative thinker.
  • Unwavering attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong presentation skills.
