The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Technical Director, The Assistant Technical Director oversees planning and execution of scenic and technical designs for 40+ productions in a season in multiple venues. This includes attending meetings, approving designs, building, and installing designs. Assist in day-to-day operations of the scene shop. Organize and maintain safe and clean shop space. The Assistant Technical Director supervises production and technical crews composed of student and temporary employees, and acts as the Technical Director’s representative when the Technical Director is unavailable.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Technical Director to oversee planning and execution of scenic and technical designs for 40+ productions in a season in multiple venues.
- Attend all production meetings. In collaboration with Production Management, supervise the development of detailed and correct working plans/drawings for the physical productions based on plans submitted by artistic staff; offer feedback on proposed scenic designs in terms of safety, feasibility, scope, and time; provide creative solutions to production problems to achieve the artistic vision of the creative team that are within the scope of budgetary, labor and schedule parameters.
- Ensure the safe and accurate installation of all physical elements for all student productions in the performance spaces.
- Coordinate the on-site logistics for the transport, load-in, and strike of each production into and out of the theatre.
- In concert with the Technical Director and shop staff, build and assemble scenic elements for each production; transport, load-in, and strike scenic elements into and out of the performance space; rig any hung elements to safety standards; assist in the installation and focus of lighting/sound/video elements as needed
- Function as an on-site supervisor of student and over-hire shop staff to ensure safe operating procedures in the scene shop and performance spaces in accordance with OSHA and other regulatory agencies protocols.
- Coordinate production logistics as the on-site supervisor at the performance spaces.
- Provide on-site technical supervision of tech rehearsals in the performance spaces as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required, 2-4 years of related experience.
- Must be able to lift, move, pull, or push items that weigh up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work independently with assigned tasks essential.
- Flexible work schedule required, with evening and weekend hours as assigned by the Director of Production.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two-years field experience in theatre is preferred.
- Demonstrated skill in scene shop management and scenic element construction preferred.
