Position Summary

Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Research Computing Services; the Assistant Research Systems Engineer will work with the Columbia School of Social Work’s (CSSW) Office of Computing and Instructional Technology (OCIT) team to assist in implementing and managing a secure computing environment for researchers, faculty members, doctoral students and administrators including: desktop and laptop security management, secure data management; back- up solutions, provision of technical support to users, identifying solutions to meet faculty and researchers IT needs and keeping abreast of IT security trends and solutions. The CSSW IT Systems Manager will provide on-site supervision and training.


Responsibilities

Desktop/laptop support (40%):

  • Sets up, upgrades, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs faculty, research, administration and other computers managed by OCIT.
  • Provides end-user support to faculty, researchers, and staff for hardware, software, Internet, email, phone, mobile devices, and printing issues.
  • Provides documentation and training to faculty and administrators, and project staff.
  • Asset management – keeps a detailed inventory and history of all equipment (desktop computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, docking stations, etc.), software licenses, services, and maintenance contracts as well as records of technical and procedural documentation.
  • Manages the provisioning, reassignment, and/or decommissioning of RingCentral and CUIT-managed cell phones for CSSW affiliates. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all accounts, conduct biannual audits to identify unused accounts, and ensure their timely discontinuation.
  • Procures institutional price quotes for computer hardware, printers, and software applications.

Research computing strategy and support (30%):

  • Maintains and updates internal OCIT knowledge base
  • Maintains outward facing web pages documenting computing services, resources, and procedures for the CSSW academic and research community.
  • Assists with technical recommendations, drafting specifications and configuring new equipment.
  • Liaises and meets regularly with cross-campus research and technology groups.
  • Works with Research Computing Services/Columbia University IT on identifying solutions to meet faculty and researcher computing needs, particularly funded research projects. 
  • Provides ongoing computer support to faculty and researchers.

Secure data management (20%):

  • Serves as data security officer by assisting researchers with sensitive/restricted data applications and agreements, and overseeing secured computers and secure data environments for the analysis of restricted-use data.

Performs project-specific duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested (10%):

  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 0-2 years' related experience.
  • Proficiency with the Windows operating system and command prompt.
  • Proficiency in laptop and desktop troubleshooting.
  • Basic understanding of computer networking.
  • Experience working with Active Directory.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, and time management skills to support faculty, research faculty, administrators, and students.
  • Ability to coordinate systems and support existing Columbia University IT departments. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise. 
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects. 
  • Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work weekends and off-hours work on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a help desk/desktop support role.
  • IT related certifications such as A+, Network+, Security+.
  • Understanding of multiple technical infrastructure roles and tools.
  • Project management knowledge.
  • The ability to confer and consult with faculty, as well as research staff and students, on technical topics during various project meetings.
  • Proficiency with the Mac operating system.
  • Experience with social science research workflows and research computing environments.
  • Experience with website development and maintenance.
  • Experience with IT ticketing system, ServiceNow preferred.
