Position Summary
The Assistant Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Unson partnership housed within the Weatherhead East Asian Institute
(WEAI), as well as manage the administrative functions of the Center for Korean Research. The Assistant Director will report jointly to the Columbia-Unson Partnership Program Director and the Faculty Director of the Center for Korean Research
(CKR), under the supervision of Lien-Hang Nguyen, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Dorothy Borg Associate Professor in the History of the United States and East Asia.
The Columbia-Unson partnership is a new three-year grant-funded research project (with the possibility of renewal) supported by Columbia University and the Unson Foundation, aimed at advancing long-term human, economic, and planetary health and wellbeing for future generations through education, measurement, research, and engagement.
The WEAI is a hub for the study of modern and contemporary East, Southeast, and Inner Asia at Columbia University. It is an integrated center for research and teaching. The Institute brings together faculty, research scholars, and students from across the university and advances knowledge and understanding of the region through academics, research programs, a renowned publications series, and a robust calendar of public events.

Responsibilities

Center Operations:

Oversee the administration of both the Columbia-Unson Partnership and CKR, ensuring alignment with University and Institute policies and procedures.

Develop strategic and operational goals in collaboration with directors.

Maintain Center bylaws and membership lists.
- Program & Event Management:
- Organize and manage logistics for conferences, workshops, and events—including proposal development, advertising, payments, and post-event reporting.
- Lead the planning and execution of the Summer 2025 Unson exploratory survey in Japan (Itoshima and Fukuoka), including travel and stakeholder engagement as well as the documentation and reporting of findings to inform curriculum development.
- Travel to Japan 1–2 times per year to support program implementation and engagement.
- Academic and HR Operations:
- Act as a liaison between CKR and the wider campus community, including faculty, researchers, and students.
- Manage instructional and research appointments, student casual hiring, and temp staffing needs.
- Oversee CKR collaborations with campus student groups and academic fellows.
- Support Unson recruitment, admissions coordination, and communications with applicants.
- Interview, train, and supervise student workers
- Finance & Budgeting:
- Manage budgets, payments, reimbursements, and expense tracking for both centers.
- Process check requests, vendor contracts, and reconcile transactions.
- Assist with financial reporting for grants and donors.
- Support directors in donor management and fundraising, including grant writing and preparation, statistical compilation, and donor reporting.
- Provide administrative support for fellowships, including fund allocation for PhD summer fellows.
- Communications & Publicity:
- Lead communication strategies for both centers, including social media, digital content, websites, and promotional materials.
- Engage stakeholders in Japan and Korea through digital and in-person outreach.
- Draft director remarks, press releases, event materials, and newsletters.
- Manage content using software platforms such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and related tools; track analytics for all digital platforms.
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with Columbia’s Communications and Public Affairs Office.
- Exercise editorial oversight for the content and design of the Center’s website and other public interfaces (e.g., eNewsletters, event flyers, display boxes, noticeboards, scholarly and professional directories and journals, etc.).
- Create, curate, and distribute promotional materials relating to all aspects of the Center’s programming (e.g., fliers, press releases, news articles, videos, slide decks, etc.)
- Evaluation & Reporting:
- Monitor and document the progress of Unson programming, including curriculum development and alignment with program goals.
- Coordinate and prepare annual progress reports on research, engagement, and student experiences.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in Korean and Japanese.
- Experience working in Korea/Japan or with Korean/Japanese entities.
- Experience in higher education administration.
- Familiarity with Columbia platforms (e.g., PeopleSoft, ARC, Concur, Payment Works, as well as budgeting tools and Microsoft Office).
- Financial accounting and/or bookkeeping experience.
Other Requirements
- Proven expertise in event and program management, especially in student affairs or academic program coordination.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills.
- Self-starter and fast learner who can work independently under limited supervision.
- Willingness to travel to Japan 1-2 times per year.
