The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Director of the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP), the Advising Dean in the James H. and Christine Turk Berick Center for Student Advising is responsible for advising undergraduate students across all class years in Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Primary responsibilities include student advising, making connections for advisees to other campus-based advising services (resource referral), supporting the Center's programming and operational efforts, and overseeing the academic progress of advisees. The Advising Dean in this position will help lead programming and advising activities with the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP) while assuming an average advising load. Some evening and weekend responsibilities expected.


Responsibilities

  • Student advising duties include counseling students about academic policies, programs, and options; assisting students in the development of meaningful educational plans; and supporting students by helping them to identify and assess alternatives and the impact of their decisions. An Advising Dean supports students as they develop greater responsibility for their educational goals, evaluate post-graduate options, and transition to life after college. All Advising Deans are expected to develop keen crisis management skills. This advising dean may also work with specific athletics teams, academic departments in both schools, partner offices within and outside of the University, and will be expected to foster a sense of collaboration and cooperation within and outside of the Center for Student Advising.

  • Resource referral duties include maintaining a comprehensive knowledge about all academic policies and procedures, core requirements, pre-professional information, and all non-major specific information. An Advising Dean will work collaboratively with faculty, academic departments, the Center for Career Education, other campus resources and other departments within both Columbia College and SEAS to provide students with necessary scholastic, co-curricular and personal resources.

  • Programming duties include supporting the programming efforts of the CSA and large-scale Columbia College and SEAS programming efforts such the New Student Orientation Program, Family Weekend, Days on Campus, Class Day, and specialty programming. An Advising Dean assists in training new advising deans. In addition, an Advising Dean may participate in Center, College, and campus wide committees and work groups that develop and support the student advising structure for the two schools.

  • Oversight of academic progress duties include maintaining current records on advisees (i.e., academic plans, leaves of absence, readmission, summer study, academic disciplinary reports, student petitions, requests for incompletes, graduation clearance, etc.). The Advising Dean communicates with faculty and other advising resources as appropriate.

  • Partner with relevant offices within Columbia College and Columbia Engineering to address crisis situations with one of his/her advisees.

  • Manage specific cross-unit and cross-functional responsibilities that will require collaborative work within the CSA and with the CSA's partner offices.

  • The Advising Dean will be assigned one or more specialty functions within the Center for Student Advising for which they are responsible for developing expertise and serving as a resource to other advising deans; This specialty of this particular position includes a programmatic focus. This Advising Dean will help lead programming activities for the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP). CUSP is an academic enhancement honors program for Columbia College and SEAS Scholars that provides cohort-specific and broad-based programming within a strong and coherent advising structure. Programming responsibilities include: (1) participating in the development of the CUSP curriculum, (2) implementing and assessing the CUSP program, including summer fellowship program, and (3) coordinating with various offices as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience

  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience college students in one or more of the following areas: academic advising; college teaching; experience mentoring undergraduates in research; experience in undergraduate administration or other relevant experience

  • Excellent written, oral communication, administrative, and interpersonal skills

  • Flexibility and attention to detail
  • Strong capacity to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple projects

  • Some evening and weekend work is required

  • Prefer experience working with college students in one or more of the following areas: academic advising; college teaching; career counseling; academic support programs; residential life or general student affairs administration
