Position Summary

The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), seeks adult Physician Assistants (PA) or Nurse Practitioners (NP) for dynamic clinical practice opportunities, including:

  1. Outpatient clinic care for diverse patients seeking HIV treatment and prevention, sexual health, COVID and chronic illness management, as well as pre- and post-transplant care.
  2. Inpatient consultations and follow-up visits within the General Infectious Disease and Transplant Infectious Disease Consult Services.
  3. A primary role in the Intravenous Antibiotic Consultation Service, aiding in patient transitions from inpatient to outpatient status and monitoring therapeutic outcomes.

The NP/PA will join a vibrant team of ID and HIV physicians (attendings and fellows) and clinical pharmacists, working to establish effective communication between consult services, Infection Prevention and Control, and the Antibiotic Stewardship Program. This role offers an opportunity for independent work under core faculty supervision, with training and mentorship provided by the Division. As a central member of this expanding service, the NP/PA may pursue teaching, research collaborations, academic growth, and leadership opportunities, aligned with individual interests.


Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document comprehensive patient histories as appropriate.
  • Conduct relevant physical exams and document of pertinent findings.
  • Formulate diagnostic impressions and goal-directed care plans, including health maintenance and clinical interventions per protocols.
  • Provide patient-centered health education and assess responses to treatment.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate hospital care, testing, and laboratory data collection.
  • Serve as a communication liaison between families and the ID team, ensuring consistent follow-up.
  • Manage ID recommendations, such as lab tests and microbiology data, and educate patients on antibiotic treatment.
  • Lead programmatic protocols, standing orders, policies, and database management.
  • Progressively take on independent patient evaluations and documentation for billing.
  • Pursue continuing education to maintain clinical competencies and license requirements.
  • Conduct patient record reviews to assess care quality and engage in peer and utilization reviews.
  • Perform additional related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus one to two years of experience
  • Current applicable New York State licensure
  • Board certification
  • BCLS and ACLS certification
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative work style
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of clinical practice in outpatient or inpatient setting
  • Demonstrated interest in Infectious Diseases and antimicrobial therapy
  • Experience caring for hospitalized medical or surgical patients
  • Proficiency in Spanish

Other Requirements

  • Participation in the medical surveillance program
    • Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
    • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
