Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is seeking a Marine Science Systems Technician-1.  The Marine Science Systems Technician-1 (MSST-1) serves as a technical Jr. Operator and assists with technical/electronics support and maintenance for seagoing science missions at LDEO and at sea onboard the academic research vessel, R/V Marcus G. Langseth. Monitors hardware performance and provides input into discussions on equipment upgrades/replacement. When assigned on board the ship for science missions, this person serves as a shift watch (under the direction of senior staff) during all Langseth science operations.  As watch stander, this individual is responsible for logging events as directed for the various data recording systems on Langseth.  The MSST-1 must follow quality and safety procedures. 


Responsibilities

  • Assists in the set-up, troubleshooting & operation of science systems as directed. Assists in instrument deployment and recovery. Participates in operation and troubleshooting of data acquisition systems. Provides Science party IT support during science cruises.
  • Participates in shipboard experiment support/logistics and other requirements as directed. Assists with equipment preparation and shipment. Assist with on shore logistical support for the LDEO research vessel missions and conducts modifications and upgrades of equipment and software/hardware development of instrumentation to be installed on the vessel.
  • Shore based support at LDEO/OMO for other projects as directed.  Projects would encompass survey planning, equipment upkeep, equipment replacement, equipment storage organization, data reports, etc.
  • Participates in training for furthering candidate’s knowledge of the various data collection systems used on the Langseth.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Engineering, or related scientific field with a minimum of 0-2 years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, 2-4 years required. Experience with troubleshooting and repair of electronics is required.  Familiarity with various computer-operating systems and with computer hardware preferred, familiarity and application of basic IT practices preferred.  Familiarity with seismic industry and oceanographic industry equipment and procedures preferred.  Good communication, organizational, and documentation skills required. Flexibility and adaptability to work in dynamic environments as well as the ability to work with diverse methodologies and philosophies encountered when working with science groups from other institutions highly desired.   Persons interested in sea-going experiences are welcome to apply.
