Position Summary

This position will support the department by providing support for a newborn screening research study. The candidate is responsible for recruiting and obtaining informed consent from mothers who have recently delivered a baby for the GUARDIAN newborn screening study; communicate with the newborn screening staff to mark newborn screening specimens for testing.

Responsibilities

• Recruit and obtain informed consent from mothers who have recently delivered a baby for the GUARDIAN newborn screening study.
• Communicate with the newborn screen staff to mark newborn screening specimens for testing.
• Accurate record who does and does not consent to testing and communicate this back to the study team.
• Determine why potential participants decline enrollment if they decline.
• Call out normal results to families.
• Upload results into the electronic health record.
• Enter data into the study data base and attend team meetings.
• Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Fluent in Spanish.
• One year of related experience preferred.
• Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Highly organized with great attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

Other Requirements

• Candidate must Successfully undergo a drug screening test and a background check prior to receiving a final offer of employment. All background checks for support staff positions will be initiated centrally by the Columbia University Human Resources Background Check (BGC) Team. In compliance with New York City’s Fair Chance Act (Background checks are completed in two stages): The Pre-Offer: Verifies Education and Employment history Once employment and education credentials have been verified in a Pre-Offer Background Check, the University may extend an offer of employment.
