Position Summary

The Columbia Center for Translational Immunology (CCTI) is seeking a Technician A to support the laboratory operations of two large research centers within the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The Technician A will work as a member of the Operations Team and provide routine support for laboratory operations, shared supplies, equipment, facilities coordination, inventory management, and other activities necessary to maintain an efficient research environment.

Under supervision, the Technician A will assist with maintaining shared laboratory resources, supporting laboratory personnel, coordinating routine operational activities, and performing technical and administrative tasks as assigned. The individual may provide coverage for laboratory support needs across the centers as operational demands arise. This position is well-suited for candidates interested in pursuing a career in laboratory operations, research support, or laboratory management.


Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintaining laboratory and shared research spaces.
  • Submit and follow up on facilities and custodial work requests.
  • Monitor inventories of shared laboratory supplies and assist with restocking materials.
  • Assist with maintaining freezers, including routine defrosting, monitoring, and alarm notifications.
  • Support laboratory personnel with shared resources, including lab coats, dry ice, wet ice, compressed gases, autoclaves, and eyewash stations.
  • Perform routine administrative duties, including supply ordering, package receipt and distribution, invoice processing, and purchase order support.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of conference and shared-use spaces.
  • Help monitor laboratory equipment alarm systems and communicate alerts as needed.
  • Assist with laboratory and equipment moves and relocations.
  • Support laboratory compliance activities by maintaining records and assisting with inspections and documentation related to laboratory safety requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining shared equipment and provide basic user support following appropriate training.
  • Maintain laboratory inventories and update tracking systems and databases.
  • Change liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks and monitor supply levels.
  • Assist with routine technical laboratory support activities as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Two years of college or a completed A.A. program with an emphasis in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program.
  • One year of related experience, or equivalent in education, training and experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior laboratory, research, or laboratory operations experience.
  • Experience working in a research, healthcare, or academic environment.

Other Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made.
  • Medical clearance and participation in the medical surveillance program
    • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
