The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Director, Training & Prevention, and as a member of the SVR Training & Prevention team, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing advanced leadership, coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative sexual and gender-based violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual and street harassment prevention education, training, and community engagement initiatives across the university.

The Assistant Director serves as a senior member of the Training and Prevention team, and supports strategic direction, operational management, and ongoing evaluation of departmental prevention initiatives. The incumbent will collaborate with departmental colleagues to plan, implement, and evaluate theory- and evidence-informed prevention strategies. This position will partner with the Director of Training and Prevention to lead complex, evidence-based and evidence-informed prevention strategies that advance institutional efforts focused on culture change, community accountability, inclusion, and student engagement.

This position requires the successful completion of all mandatory department and university training at onboarding and on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with institutional policies and job-specific responsibilities.  SVR is a New York State Department of Health certified Rape Crisis Program; all staff must complete required training and certification within the first 90 days of hire. 

This is an essential on-site role requiring a non-traditional schedule, including regular evening and weekend hours.  Limited hybrid flexibility may be considered.

Responsibilities

Program Development & Management (50%)

  • Designs, delivers, and evaluates innovative evidence-based and evidence-informed prevention education programs focused on topics including, but not limited to, affirmative consent, healthy and thriving relationships, and bystander intervention.
  • Supports campus-wide awareness events, campaigns, and collaborative prevention strategies.
  • Designs, implements, and updates evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of trainings, program curricula, and performance outcomes.
  • Assists in the development of strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for prevention programs and services for SVR.
  • Builds networks of allies to support gender- and power-based violence training and prevention efforts, including participation in events.
  • In collaboration with the Prevention Coordinators, assists in the management of the Peer Educator program.
  • Assists with the interviewing, selection, and training of Peer Educators.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Training and Prevention, assists with supervisory duties for prevention and education interns.
  • In partnership with other identified project leads from the SVR team, coordinates, plans, implements, and evaluates regular volunteer- and intern-wide meetings, special events, and continuing education sessions.
  • In conjunction with the Senior Executive Director and Director of Training & Prevention, assists with the development of annual reports, proposals, papers, and presentation materials; prepares administrative reports documenting SVR training activities and projecting resource needs for prevention and outreach efforts.
  • Manages administrative aspects of planning outreach efforts and prevention programs for SVR, including maintaining records, evaluation-related data, and reports.
  • In collaboration with SVR staff, campus colleagues, and community partners, coordinates, develops, and delivers community-based primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programming directed at the prevention of sexual and intimate partner violence, which may include athletes, fraternities and sororities, undergraduate and graduate student organizations, and undergraduate and graduate academic departments.

Facilitation & Culture Change (30%)

  • Leads the facilitation of trauma-informed, equity-centered educational programs, workshops, and dialogues focused on sexual and gender-based violence, affirmative consent, thriving relationships, bystander intervention, and institutional culture change across diverse university communities.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates strategic culture change initiatives that promote community accountability, inclusion, and prevention-focused engagement aligned with university values, public health frameworks, and evidence-informed and evidence-based practices.
  • Collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders to assess emerging community needs, strengthen prevention messaging, and foster sustained campus-wide engagement.
  • Utilizes evaluation data, participant feedback, and emerging research to assess facilitation outcomes and continuously refine prevention strategies, educational approaches, and culture change efforts to improve impact and effectiveness.
  • In collaboration with the Training and Prevention team, coordinates the planning, curriculum development, implementation, logistics, and evaluation of New Student Orientation, Student Leader Training, SVR certification trainings, and related programming.
  • Serves as facilitator or co-facilitator for training activities and provides technical support accordingly.

Collaboration and Related Services (15%)

  • Fosters partnerships with other educational institutions while maintaining and expanding an existing network of contacts.
  • Participates in university and community committees and task forces as needed.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders including Columbia Health colleagues, undergraduate and graduate students, Student Affairs, and community-based programs to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to violence prevention for students.
  • Manages accurate statistical data reflecting various aspects of prevention and education service provision and compliance.
  • Assists in data collection and reporting for grant compliance and institutional assessment purposes.
  • Works in partnership with the Training and Prevention team in recruitment, selection, orientation, training, supervision, retention, and development of new and existing volunteers and student-staff Peer Educators and interns.
  • In partnership with the Training and Prevention team, coordinates student-driven, institution-wide events and educational programs (e.g., Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Relationship Violence Awareness Month, Stalking Awareness Month).
  • Stays abreast of current developments in the college sexual assault field by participating in professional development activities, including listservs, reviewing current literature and research, and attending professional conferences and trainings; remains informed of relevant policy directives including, but not limited to, the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights/Title IX, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Clery Act, Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE Act), NYS Enough Is Enough (EIE), NYS Department of Health Rape Crisis Program and Public Health regulations, HIPAA, and FERPA.

Performs other duties as assigned. (5%)

 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  
  • A minimum of four (4) years of closely related experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in violence prevention or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing violence prevention and education programs targeting young adults and engaging diverse communities.
  • Training in sexual assault and intimate partner violence.
  • Experience designing, facilitating, and evaluating one-on-one sessions and small and large group presentations, workshops, and trainings.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • Experience working with survivors of power- and gender-based violence.
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize competing demands and rapidly shift between projects and priorities.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment with a commitment to social justice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or advanced degree in public health, education, sociology, psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence or providing prevention education in a college or university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in content and curriculum design.
  • Proficiency in designing visual tools and aids for presentations and materials.
  • Familiarity with Enough Is Enough legislation and New York State Rape Crisis Program (RCP) certification standards.
  • Experience working in a complex, decentralized organization with an understanding of larger institutional goals and objectives.
  • Proven record of applying principles of diversity and social justice to prevention practice.
  • Knowledge of the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights/Title IX, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Clery Act, and Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE Act).
