Position Summary

The Large Animal Transplantation Program at Columbia Center for Translational Immunology is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic Veterinary Technician with an interest in transplantation biology and xenotransplantation to join our team. Our research focuses on strategies to induce tolerance to solid organ transplantation in large animal models. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator(s), and the post-doctoral fellow(s) the Veterinary Technician will work to support the research program and provide care and nursing of the experimental animals.


Responsibilities

  • Perform daily animal care, checkups, clinical laboratory/diagnostic tests, and nursing of the experimental animals including but not limited to animal handling and restraint, collection of blood and body fluids, administration of drugs, and tissue harvest.
  • Administer medications, and necessary treatments as directed by the principal Investigator and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Prepare medications, clinical infusions, lab reagents and assist the postdoctoral fellows in conducting the animal and/or laboratory experiments.
  • Perform animal and/or laboratory experiments according to SOPs and regulatory protocols
  • Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Order and maintain the inventory of animal, clinical, and laboratory supplies.
  • Maintain a laboratory/electronic notebook or records related to tasks.
  • Participate in collection, documentation, and communication of the animal observations, laboratory data and research materials.
  • Contribute to building a culture that embraces scientific excellence, integrity, efficiency, teamwork, and continuous learning and improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with PI and team members.
  • Perform other related duties necessary to the functioning of the laboratory and research projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree animal sciences, veterinary sciences, biology, chemistry or related field, and at least one and one-half years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience
  • Ability to perform work in a neat and orderly manner in accordance with safety, and federal, state, and institutional regulations for humane care and welfare of the animals
  • Attention to detail and quality
  • Skills for problem identification and troubleshooting
  • Sense of ownership for the tasks assigned
  • Ability to communicate effectively and timely with users and colleagues
  • Effective time management and inter-personal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in animal sciences, veterinary sciences, biology, chemistry or related field
  • Experience/knowledge/interest in animal handling, care, and husbandry
  • Clinical and laboratory research experience

Other Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made
