Position Summary

The Department of Physiology/Cellular Biophysics is looking to hire a Technician B to work in the laboratory of Dr. Mancia. As a Tech B the finalist will enjoy an unique, immersive introductory experience in biomedical research, with an emplasis on molecular biology, membrane protein production, biochemistry and structural biology techniques. This experience is intended to prepare the Tech B for a career in scientific research.

This position will work in a state-of-the-art membrane protein biochemistry laboratory under a senior lab member.   Initially, the Technician B will work closely with a postdoctoral researcher who will familiarize the incumbent with the Mancia lab, introduce the incumbent to basic laboratory skills and molecular biology techniques. As the incumbent gains experience and independence, they will work to support other members of the laboratory, as well as undertake projects of their own.


Responsibilities

  • To perform fully planned experiments under the direction of a senior lab member and after the initial training conduct independent experiments such as growing bacterial cell cultures, molecular biology experiments and protein purifications
  • Preparing common stock solutions for the lab.
  • Routine maintenance of lab equipment, including critical ones such as HPLC and FPLC systems.
  • General molecular biology, including gene amplification, cloning and construction of expression constructs.
  • Cell culture (bacterial, insect and mammalian cell systems).
  • Purification of membrane proteins in both small and large scales.
  • Biophysical and functional analysis of integral membrane proteins.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry or related field, or equivalent in combined education, training and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior laboratory experience is preferred
  • Highly motivated person with a strong background in immunology and management of mouse colonies
