Position Summary

A Technician B position is available in the laboratory of Dr Catherine Clelland, at Columbia University Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry. The successful candidate for this position will help to investigate the molecular mechanisms of cognitive deficits in Alzheimer’s disease and will then target these molecular pathways to treat the disease, using a number of mouse models. Specific duties include: Performing mouse behavioral testing and brain dissection, performing laboratory molecular experiments (DNA and RNA extraction from humans and murine tissues, RT-PCR and DNA sequencing), keeping records of results of experiments and data analysis.

The position is available immediately. The successful applicant should have experience in the use of and handling of genetic mouse models for study of the CNS, including directly working with animals and dissection. Laboratory experience in molecular biological techniques such as PCR and DNA sequencing is also desirable. Experience working under RNAase free conditions and experience measuring gene expression (via quantitative RT-PCR) would also be a plus, although training can be provided.

Responsibilities

• Performs mouse behavioral testing, maintenance of the mouse colony, plus upkeeping records of the mouse colony.

• Performs CNS dissections.

• Performs laboratory molecular experiments (DNA and RNA extraction from humans and murine tissues, RT-PCR and DNA sequencing).

• Keeps records of all experiments and performs some initial data analysis.

• Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training and experience.  

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of related experience preferred.

• Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred.

• Experience with mouse dissection and behavioral testing of animal models.

• Laboratory experience in molecular biological techniques such as PCR and DNA sequencing. Experience working under RNAase free conditions and experience measuring gene expression (via quantitative RT-PCR).

• Ability to organize experiments in standard form and record data in a scientific notebook.

• Ability to learn and adapt to new techniques.

• Familiarity with computer programs, include Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

• Completion of special indicator training and HIPAA compliance.
