The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Animal Facility Operations, the small animal husbandry supervisor provides direction for the day-to-day operation for the care of small lab animals housed in the animal facility. This is accomplished via morning meetings with the husbandry staff and meetings with the facility manager to discuss staffing needs for the facility as dictated by operational needs. The main emphasis will be on providing service to the investigators and their staff, continuing education of the staff, oversight of maintenance requirements of the facility and compliance with federal, state, local and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines. The supervisor must exercise leadership, good judgment and professionalism always when interacting with the research community and/or institute personnel. Scheduling, monitoring and supervising the animal husbandry and sanitation duties of about 10- 15 technicians to ensure program and facility compliance with established laws, regulations, and guidelines. Individuals must possess strong written and verbal communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills. Sound working knowledge of biohazardous containment, husbandry practices, regulatory and compliance standards. Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment with an active role in employee development. Dedication to facilitating good research while ensuring compliance with federal state, city and university regulatory requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Schedule, monitor and supervise the animal husbandry and sanitation duties of husbandry technicians to ensure program and facility compliance with established laws, regulations, and guidelines. (40%)
  • Provide training for new hires with associated documentation of training and progress to assist in decisions of retention or dismissal. (10%)
  • Initiating, conducting, documenting, and monitoring progressive discipline of a unionized staff (when necessary) in a timely and consistent manner per union’s collective bargaining agreement. (15%)
  • Verify & ensure accuracy of employee timesheets for biweekly payroll production. (15%)
  • Act as a facilitator of research by providing expertise to facility users in the areas of husbandry techniques and related resources. (10%)
  • Providing onsite weekend and holiday supervision on a rotating schedule. (10%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience or Associate’s degree in veterinary technology/animal science and equivalent education/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of related management experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • AALAS certification at the LATG level preferred.
  • Knowledge of murine infectious diseases, husbandry practices, and regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment and support employee.
