A very exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced Embryology Laboratory Supervisor to join the Columbia University Fertility Center!

The Laboratory Supervisor for the Embryology Laboratory reports Directly to Laboratory Director and takes direction from Laboratory Director. The Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day operations of the embryology lab. This role involves managing laboratory staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practices and staff competences to ensure excellent patient care and outcomes. The Supervisor will be responsible for monitoring laboratory procedures and ensuring quality control and quality assurance.


Responsibilities

  1. Laboratory Management & Operations:
    • Supervise a team of embryologists and laboratory coordinators.
    • Supervises all embryology procedures.
    • Manages efficiently the daily operations of the embryology laboratory, including coordination of staff schedules, workload management, and laboratory resource allocation.
    • Performs all embryology procedures.
    • Mentor and train new embryologists.
    • Assist on the development and implementation of training programs for new and existing team members.
    • Ensure that members of the embryology team keep and maintain competences and high standards of performance.
    • Monitor embryology performance according to the agreed standards and take necessary action to communicate, assist and advice according to performance levels.
    • Able to troubleshoot and problem solving in the embryology laboratory.
    • Reports all non-compliances to the Laboratory Director.
  1. Laboratory Quality Management System:
    • Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) protocols to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and accreditation requirements.
    • Assists Laboratory Director with reviewing standard operating procedures (SOP) for the embryology Laboratory.   
    • Assists the Laboratory Director with equipment management and service.
    • Oversee and performs the maintenance, calibration, and validation of laboratory equipment and ensures proper functioning.
    • Assist Laboratory Director with regular review of laboratory practices, processes, and outcomes to identify areas for improvement and ensure continuous quality enhancement.
    • Manage proficiency testing and assist the Laboratory Director to prepare the laboratory for external inspections and accreditation reviews.
    • Assist in conducting internal audits such as witnessing, cryo-inventory of frozen sperm, eggs and embryos and traceability of laboratory consumables.
    • Ensure strict adherence to all aspects of infection control and risk management of the embryology laboratory.
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all laboratory procedures, results, observations and documentation.
    • To work outside normal working hours when necessary, including participating in the 24/7 laboratory monitoring.
  1. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Assist the Laboratory Director to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including CAP, FDA and other relevant accreditation bodies.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all laboratory activities, including patient records, equipment maintenance logs, and quality control data.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  1. Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to coordinate patient care and ensure optimal outcomes.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and journal clubs and discussions related to patient treatment plans and laboratory results.
    • Collaborate closely with Laboratory Director to develop laboratory strategies for continuous improvement, efficiency and optimization.
    • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  1. Working Conditions: 
  • The position requires work in a laboratory setting with exposure to biological materials, chemicals, and other potential hazards.
  • Weekend and holiday work will be required based on patient needs and laboratory operations.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of embryology procedures.
  • Able to demonstrate up to date continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to lead a diverse team in a high-stakes environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to quality and precision in laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a Biological Science or related field. 
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an IVF laboratory.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience is preferred, if not training will be provided by Laboratory Director.
  • Certification Standards for Technical Supervisor.
