The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

The Senior Communications Specialist, Institutional Communications supports the implementation of institutional internal and external communications strategies for the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

 

The Senior Communications Specialist will be primarily responsible for managing internal and external outreach to support administrative units including Education, Student Health on Haven, Government and Community Affairs,  the Office of Well-Being, and Campus Events.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to support internal and external awareness of the work of administrative units such as Office of Education, Office of Well-Being, Office of Community Affairs, Office of Government Relations, and others
  • Employ project management skills to track progress and deadlines for tactics and deliverables such as email management, content creation, event promotion and other communications activities.
  • Write, edit and support institutional announcements (news about organizational structure, administrative appointments, and employee recognition)
  • Develop and write stories about people, events, and initiatives to engage internal and external audiences
  • Provide support to units and depts to promote events and activities
  • Manage mailings and other dissemination channels as needed

Other projects and duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience

Other Requirements

The Communications Specialist is required to have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working as a writer, project coordinator, and/or web editor. They should be able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and must have strong interpersonal skills.

They should be experienced in CRM platforms (Mailchimp, Salesforce, others) to ensure that the communications team remains efficient and productive while maintaining high standards.

The incumbent should demonstrate the ability to work well, both independently and on teams. The incumbent should have excellent customer service standards, organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and the ability to work with creative teams and diverse audiences. The incumbent should be able to work in both Macintosh and PC environments and should have intermediate or higher knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
