The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Director for International Student Services, the Senior International Student Advisor serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to issue required US government documents for international students during their studies and any period of post-completion employment authorization. Consults with SEVIS Help Desk and US Custom& Immigration Services to resolve processing or status problems. Advises and provides guidance to F-1 and J-1 students related to their opportunities, rights, and responsibilities on immigration regulations and university policies, including maintaining their legal status, extensions of stay, travel, transfers, and off-campus employment. Consults with the Associate Director on more complex immigration cases. Evaluates immigration documents and academic records to determine students’ eligibility for any off-campus employment and issues necessary immigration documents for off-campus employment. Serve as a University liaison to work directly with the State Department, US Department of Homeland Security, consular officers, and immigration officials on matters relating to non-immigrant students as needed.


Responsibilities

  • Consults with SEVIS Help Desk and US Custom & Immigration Services to resolve processing or status problems.
  • Consults with the Associate Director on more complex immigration cases.
  • Advises and provides guidance to F-1 and J-1 students related to their opportunities, rights, and responsibilities on immigration regulations and university policies, including maintaining their legal status, extensions of stay, travel, transfers, and off-campus employment.
  • Evaluates immigration documents and academic records to determine students’ eligibility for any off-campus employment; issues necessary immigration documents for off-campus employment.
  • Serve as a University liaison to work directly with the State Department, US Department of Homeland Security, consular officers, and immigration officials on matters relating to non-immigrant students as needed.
  • Assists in creating applications, forms and other materials related to various immigration procedures.
  • Makes recommendations for process improvements.
  • Presents at school-specific orientations and immigration workshops on Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training.
  • Refers students to the appropriate campus and community resources as needed.
  • Responds to inquiries from incoming and current international students and academic departments in person, in group settings, and by phone and email.
  • Complies with federal SEVIS reporting and record keeping requirements.
  • Collaborates with ISSO communications team to ensure regulatory information is up to date on the ISSO web site.
  • Cultivates a professional presence on campus and in the field and participates in regional and national international education conferences and meetings.
  • Serves as co-lead of the student advising team’s J-1 Student Issues Committee.
  • Serve as liaison to and collaborate with other ISSO teams and the J-program Responsible Officer on maintaining J-1 student SOPs(standard operating procedures) and related policies.
  • Serve as team lead on Sunapsis updates and software implementation and as Student Team liaison to IT/Web communications teams.
  • Serve as a lead on CUIMC Student Team Working group on Sunapsis-related projects.
  • Assists and serves as back-up to the Associate Director with managing high volume of email inquiries and concerns, processing requests for extensions, LOAs, and RCLs. Create and/or update these SOPs as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years DSO and ARO immigration regulation, advisement, compliance and SEVIS experience in a higher education environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in cross-cultural communication, counseling, area or cultural studies, foreign language, international education, or TESOL.
  • 4 years administering and advising federal F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations as DSO/ARO in a higher education setting.
  • Experience teaching/training/presenting.
  • Experience using the Sunapsis International Office database.
  • Fluency in at least one foreign language.
  • Experience living abroad.
  • Completion of NAFSA F-1 and J-1 Professional Development Programs.

Other Requirements

  • U.S. government regulations require Designated School Officials and Alternate Responsible Officer be U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Residents.
