Position Summary

The Division of Infectious Diseases at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking highly motivated Research Nurses to join the clinical research team conducting COVID-19 treatment and prevention clinical trials. Trials may include investigation of novel therapeutics, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and observational cohorts, among others.


  • Identify and contact prospective study participants and obtaining informed consent.
  • Perform required screening and on-going study evaluations; travel to off-site study visits as needed.
  • Determine eligibility of screened study participants through physical exam, medical history, laboratory results and other research procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy and peripheral intravenous catheter placement, collection of other specimens including but not limited to nasopharyneal swabs.
  • Administer study products to study participants including but not limited to intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and intravenous infusions while adhering to study protocol and Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
  • Conduct structured interviews with research study participants on medical and behavioral issues.
  • Provide education about COVID-19, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Perform HIV risk assessments and risk reduction counseling, including testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Perform assessment of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Adhering to recommended practices regarding personal protective equipment.
  • Assess and manage reactions to study products and adverse events in consultation with investigators.
  • Keep in contact with study participants according to the protocol specifications.
  • Completing case report forms in accordance with study sponsor and protocol requirements and collaborate with the research team in developing and implementing site operations and quality management plans.
  • Serve as a resource for non-clinical staff.
  • Perform additional related duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of experience
  • Current New York State RN license
  • Attention to detail with ability to manage time effectively
  • Strong organizational, clinical and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer and software applications [Microsoft office, REDCap, electronic data entry systems i.e. Medidata]
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Ability to handle confidential information and maintain confidentiality in accordance to HIPAA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Infectious disease clinical and/or research experience
  • Prior experience with phlebotomy and peripheral intravenous catheter placement for infusions
  • Experience working with racially and ethnically diverse populations
  • An interest in, or experience with COVID related research and willing to work weekends
  • Fluency in Spanish

Other Requirements

  • Participation in the medical surveillance program
  • Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
  • Wear N-95 respirator
  • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and system training requirements
