Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Program Manager for a full-time employment opportunity. Reporting to the Senior Research Scientist & Lead PI, the Program Manager will be responsible for handling comprehensive program management, implementation, and tracking, and will support as-needed special projects. In addition, they will manage day-to-day operations for the INSPIRE program and ensure overall program success.

The Implementing Novel Solutions for Promoting Cultural Change In Geoscience Research & Education (INSPIRE) program delivers a multi-faceted solution for transforming culture, shifting power, and authentically engaging underserved communities within the transdisciplinary earth and environmental sciences. INSPIRE will mentor, train, and develop early-career researchers and professionals historically underrepresented in the geosciences. By strengthening relationships between research institutions and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), INSPIRE will decolonize geoscience, prioritize engagement of communities through the co-design of research programs, and promote the equitable sharing of geoscientific knowledge broadly across our nation. INSPIRE will foster a just, equitable, and inclusive geoscience research community that reflects the diversity of the nation and is rooted in multi-directional listening and knowledge transfer.


Responsibilities

  • Program Management:
    • Manage day-to-day operations of the INSPIRE program in collaboration with the Lead PI including project management, monitoring of budgets, and project reporting.
    • Oversee the application process for Visiting Fellows and Bridge Scholars.
    • Participate in the facilitation of the program’s Council of Cultural Advisors, and coordinate activities with the LDEO Alumni Association Board.
    • Oversee the logistics for Visiting Fellows visits, including travel and lodging, and Climate School researcher reciprocal visits.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for Visiting Fellows and Bridge Scholars during their time at the Climate School.
  • Event and Projects:
    • Initiate regular meetings with INSPIRE Fellows and Scholars, quarterly meetings with the Council of Cultural Advisors, monthly Executive Team meetings, and meetings with mentors to ensure the successful execution of all project components.
    • Coordinate quarterly events with members of the LDEO Alumni Association Board.
    • Develop, launch and maintain program promotional materials for events, including establishing registration pages, developing marketing materials, and post-event communications with participants and external partners. In collaboration with University IT and facilities personnel to set up and secure event A/V equipment/resources for virtual, hybrid, and in-person events. Responsible for run-of-show preparations and management.
  • Communications and Special Projects:
    • Develop materials to help reach undergrad populations as part of the Bridge to Ph.D. recruitment program. Create and maintain a list of potential applicant sources.
    • Support Bridge Scholars through self-affirmation projects in collaboration with the Executive Team.  lead group activities, and build relationships with Columbia-focused and external affinity groups.
    • Spearhead special projects as directed by the Lead PI, including but not limited to external communications, partnership development, event planning, and new program design.
    • Manage internal and external communications initiatives to align with the strategic priorities of the program.
    • Oversee program-wide communications, regular events and annual meetings, site visits, and outreach. Compose other communications for public relations and direct marketing.
    • Design, develop and update content for the program’s website, including news releases and blog posts, event landing pages, photo and image galleries, multimedia presentations, data visualizations, interactive graphics, infographics, and presentation slide decks.
  • Other Duties:
    • Maintain metrics that track the progress of Bridge Scholars and Visiting Fellows.
    • Compile data in the annual report.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, and 2 years of related experience required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required. Basic proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is desired.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven excellence in written communication skills, including writing, proofreading, and editing.
  • A client-centric mindset and the ability to work with many different types of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Columbia University systems and procedures.
  • A working knowledge of the higher education environment and academia is preferred.
  • Interest and experience in DEIA Initiatives and geosciences/climate research are strong assets.
