Position Summary

Reporting to the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma’s Program Director, the Program Manager oversees journalism award and fellowship application and selection processes and manages operational systems supporting Dart programs and priorities. In this role, they are responsible for program and events management and logistics, financial and grants management, outreach and marketing, operations and other Center activities.


Develop strategies, organize and plan, in conjunction with Dart program leaders, proposal, application and selection processes for US and international programs that reflect the standards of the Center and of the school..

Manage Dart programs, trainings, and initiatives, including project timelines and deliverables; manage relationships with training clients and program participants; work with Columbia University and external stakeholders.

Implement competitive application and selection processes, which may entail helping to assemble and convene a selection jury. Direct marketing activities. Promote opportunities through the Dart Center and Journalism School networks, partner organization networks and through individual outreach.

Manage planning and logistics for on-site and off-site events, including but not limited to: space reservations, audio/visual set up, invitations and marketing materials, catering and facilities, promotional coordination with the broader Journalism School and Columbia University communities.

Manage communications and outreach for the Dart Center.

Manage grant application development and submission; support relationship-building with funders.

Executes all basic finance processing and accounting for the department, including making all payments to vendors, invoicing, tracking all payments, and confirming all deposits, and provides fiscal oversight. This includes working with the Finance department to reconcile program budgets, correct errors, adjust budget lines as-needed, and to secure necessary approvals. Prepares quarterly reports and reviews with Director and Finance Finance processing, includes but not limited to: managing accounts and credit card reconciliation; reconciling and generating reports; reviewing and submitting expenses, reimbursements, invoices, and honoraria; managing relationships with vendors and conducting basic procurement. Troubleshoot issues as needed. Initiate and manage contract/ purchasing process for independent contractors and training clients. 

Arrange travel for Dart Center personnel and approved guests (fellows, award winners, workshop participants, speakers, others.)

Serve as liaison to various Journalism School and University offices including, but not limited to, Journalism School Academic and Student Affairs, Journalism and University Communications and Events, Management, Journalism School and Central Finance, Sponsored Projects and Procurement.

Support the Dart Center with special projects as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree and/or its equivalent required

Experience: 5 years related experience

Excellent organization and administration skills; detail oriented; organized team player; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines with professionalism and discretion; experience or interest in journalism, press freedom and related issues.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with communications, event & outreach, and university administration preferred.
