The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Program for Economic Research (PER) provides the primary research support in the Department of Economics.  Reporting to the faculty Executive Director of PER, the PER Program Coordinator works to support the successful execution of the PER mission.  The PER Program Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day functions of PER, coordinating logistics for all public events, managing hiring and onboarding of research staff, and budgeting and expense reporting.  The Program Coordinator provides annual reports for the Executive Director and the PER Steering Committee.  The PER Program Coordinator assists the Executive Director in shaping and improving project management for financial and administrative operations. 



Sets budgets, advises the PER Executive Director and faculty on budgeting for initiatives; expense reporting, works on fiscal year closing, resolves financial problems, ensures fiscal compliance; and generates reports as needed and presents to the PER Steering Committee.  Other financial responsibilities include working in ARC (Columbia’s financial system) to manage a significant number of data purchases, reconcile and monitor the purchasing card, and improve financial procedures.  Program Coordinator has full ARC access (initiator, approver) for PER accounts.


Program Operations and Research Staff

Oversees PER’s initiatives, working with faculty as well as with students and student organizations.  Supports faculty with the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of research staff including Staff Associates, Research Staff Assistants (Bridge Scholar Program), and Postdoctoral Research Scholars.  Responsibilities include managing recruitment, processing appointments in PAC (Columbia’s personnel system), processing salary distributions and cost transfers, as well as ensuring compliance for grant funding; Program Coordinator has full PAC access (initiator, approver) for PER department.  The Program Coordinator manages regular events for the research staff including research-related, software training, other academic-related, as well as social,  and acts as liaison with University offices.  The Program Coordinator will hire, train, and supervise student and casual staff as needed.


Event Management

Designs and organizes approximately 30-40 PER events including high-profile public events involving speakers of national and international stature, as well as academic conferences, public lectures, and weekly seminars; the majority will be in person, some in a hybrid format. Duties include planning an annual calendar of events; managing publicity and outreach including researching, writing, and editing formal and informal announcements, creating marketing materials, social media content, website pages, print materials, working with Columbia Communications and Public Affairs, and directly with other institutions public, private, and federal; coordinating participant correspondence; site, catering and logistical arrangements, negotiating with vendors, hiring temporary staff for events; creating and managing budgets including tracking expenses and providing reports on expenditures. The Program Coordinator provides administrative support for major multi-year, multi-disciplinary initiatives, including the Cognitive and Behavioral Economics Initiative, often working closely with other Columbia institutes, centers, and programs, and in collaboration with co-sponsoring units when applicable.


Visitors Program

Manages various PER visitor programs including PER Visiting Fellows and weekly PER visiting researchers, and supervises all aspects of the PER Distinguished Lecture Series and PER mini courses.



Manages the external communications for PER and the Department which includes managing content of the Department's news including PER website, coordinating social media outreach efforts, and promoting programs and funding opportunities.


Alumni Outreach

Manages alumni outreach; plans, organizes, and attends the annual reception at the ASSA (Allied Social Sciences) and related events; manages all communication with alumni and significant donors; coordinates on- and off-campus events for alumni and donors; and compiles reports as necessary.


Other duties as required.


*This position will require evening and weekend work as necessary; travel may be required.*




Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. 

A minimum of two years of relevant experience required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and experience handling confidential information. Demonstrated aptitude for detailed administrative work. Must be service oriented and a skilled problem solver who can meet deadlines and work well under pressure with demonstrated skill in managing and completing multiple project assignments with competing priorities. Must be professional, organized, creative, and efficient, able to work successfully both individually and as part of a team. Strong computer literacy and internet proficiency is required. Must be experienced user of spreadsheet applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with event planning preferred.
