The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) will provide comprehensive clinical care to patients in the outpatient Solid Tumor Medical Oncology practice at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Working under the supervision of the Nursing/Advanced Practice Director and in close collaboration with attending physicians, the PA will support all aspects of ambulatory oncology care, including patient evaluation, treatment planning, care coordination, and ongoing clinical management.
Responsibilities
- Obtain and document comprehensive medical histories and perform detailed physical examinations
- Review and interpret laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic test results
- Formulate assessments and develop patient-specific treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians
- Place clinically appropriate orders, including diagnostic tests, medications, and specialty referrals
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and follow‑up care
- Conduct follow‑up visits to assess treatment response and modify care plans as appropriate
- Obtain informed consent for procedures and treatments within scope of practice
- Document clinical encounters, care plans, and ongoing evaluations in the electronic medical record
- Coordinate care and communicate effectively with referring physicians, inpatient teams, and external facilities
- Ensure adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory standards within the outpatient oncology clinic
- Assist with operational and clinical tasks required to support clinic workflow and patient throughput
- Participate in care team meetings, case discussions, and quality initiatives
- Perform additional clinical duties as assigned by the Nursing/Advanced Practice Director or supervising physicians
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in physician assistant studies or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of experience
- Master's degree can substitute in part for experience
- Current New York State PA license (or proof of application)
- NCCPA certification
- Eligible for DEA license
- BLS certification
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high‑acuity outpatient clinical environment
- Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in hematology/oncology or other medically complex patient populations
- Familiarity with NYP/CUIMC clinical systems, workflows, and electronic medical records
- Experience providing care in an ambulatory or multidisciplinary team‑based setting
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating with supervising physicians and clinical staff
Other Requirements
- Medical clearance and participation in Medical Surveillance program required
- Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
- Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
- Wear N-95 respirator
- Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
