Position Summary
The Adult Palliative Care Service at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital is seeking an experienced NP to join our interdisciplinary palliative care program.
Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient palliative care consultations in critical care, oncology, neurology, cardiology and surgical units.
- Provide consultative services on medicine and surgical patients, in both ICU and non-ICU settings.
- Conduct daily rounds and work together with an interdisciplinary palliative care team, consisting of a physician, social worker, chaplain, hospice and palliative medicine fellow and often other learners (medical and nursing students, other clinical fellows, etc.).
- Provide comprehensive pain and symptom management, assist with clarifying goals of care, and provide support to patients and families.
- Participate in developing educational and/or QI projects for nurses and others at the institution.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus one to two years of hospice or palliative care experience
- Experience in either hospice or palliative care
- HPNA certification (or eligibility within 1 year)
- Current New York State NP and RN licenses, board certification, DEA license, and BCLS certification
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to adapt to flexible schedule and fast/changing work environment
- Comfortable working in a busy academic hospital
- Competency in specialist level pain and symptom management
Preferred Qualifications
- Inpatient hospital experience
Other Requirements
- Participation in the medical surveillance program
- Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
- Wear N-95 respirator
- Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
- Work with known infectious agents or biological toxins where prophylactic vaccination is available
