Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will provide support to the patient care activities of the Outpatient Pulmonary Practice at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.  The candidate will serve as a key link between the patient and the physicians, overseeing the ancillary aspects of Practice operations. This support will ensure a seamless patient experience from appointment scheduling to post-visit follow-up and will enhance patient access to our services. 


Responsibilities

  • Work with the Physician Leader in the management and flow of new patient referrals to the Pulmonary Practice
  • Coordinate with the scheduling staff to ensure balance in the distribution of new patient appointments
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with established patient access goals
  • Provide support and education for the Medical Assistant (MA) staff
  • Daily assessment of Physician MA needs and ensure appropriate assignments
  • Work closely with the Practice Manager in the implementation of workflow protocols to ensure smooth daily Practice operations
  • Secure insurance authorizations for services requiring additional clinical background
  • Oversee the use of equipment and ensure proper stocking of materials needed for outpatient procedures
  • Serve as a liaison between the patients and the physicians
  • Assist with the management of Physician In-Basket messages and ensure adequate response times from Physicians with close-loop communication
  • Triage patient messages and ensure timely response
  • Assist with coordination and execution of office procedures (thoracentesis, tracheostomy changes, etc.)
  • Assist in the coordination of transferring patients needing Emergency Room care
  • Assist in patient communication and education relating to various respiratory diseases
  • Provide patient education on oxygen use, and inhaler technique
  • Perform additional related duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in education and training, plus one to two years of experience
  • Current New York State NP license, board certification, and DEA Certificate

Other Requirements

  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
