Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a highly qualified Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our team in a full time position to work within the division of Infectious Diseases (ID) Inpatient Service and provide follow up from hospital discharges in outpatient clinic. It is clear from the past 18 months how important infectious diseases are to the well-being of our community and our hospitalized patients. Our inpatient population is comprised of a variety of patients ranging from neonates to adolescents; some children from the community with acute infections, others with infections following stem cell or organ transplantation as well as the complications of other underlying illnesses. The Pediatric ID group is a well-integrated group of full time faculty physicians, devoted to patient care, teaching and research.  We are eager to have an NP as an integral part of our team to help us deliver care to our patients.  The Pediatric ID NP will join us on daily bedside rounds, weekly ID conferences devoted to patient management and be an important liaison to the other subspecialists and house staff caring for our patients. Responsibilities

• Participate in the initial evaluation of ID consultation patients and take primary responsibility for in hospital follow up.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and help to coordinate hospital care, diagnostic testing and collection of laboratory data.
• Assume a leadership role in patient communication, serving as the liaison between families and the ID team providing consistency for follow up visits.
• Take responsibility for follow up on ID recommendations: lab tests, radiology and microbiology data.
• Attend weekly Peds ID rounds, join combined Adult-Peds ID rounds as necessary.
• Educate patients and families regarding antibiotic treatment, side effects, communicability of infection. 
• Works with hospital nursing staff to develop and evaluate the nursing care plan, implementing and facilitating care, family and patient teaching.
• Assume responsibilities for programmatic protocols, standing orders, policies, and databases.
• Prepares documentation for medical records including updating patient medical chart by posting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner.
• Identifies personal and professional goals for continuing education, and maintains clinical competence set by licensing requirements as well as institutional policies.
• Progressive level of independence to evaluate patients and note writing for billing purposes while staffing with attending's on service.
• Follow up from hospital discharges in outpatient clinic.
• Educate and precept nurse practitioner students, medical students, nursing staff, and house staff.
• There is a light level of physical activity required in this role.
• This role has contact with the external public (patients).

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent in education and experience required; plus four years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examination
• Ability to manage and coordinate a patient case load
• Work within a collaborative agreement/protocols with a physician and health care team
• Demonstrate leadership ability to manage patients and interact effectively with peers and physicians

Other Requirements

• Current NYS NP License, maintain and renew when necessary. (NP’s are Required to have a NYS license to qualify for the position)
