Position Summary
The Columbia Spatial Epidemiology Lab (CSEL), led by Dr. Dustin T. Duncan, is seeking a highly motivated for a Summer Research Assistant position at the intersection of public health law, legal epidemiology, and global health equity. This position is ideal for students interested in applying constitutional law, global law, and legal frameworks to advance population health, institutional accountability, and structural equity. Responsibilities include conducting legal and policy research focused on health equity and population health; support development of legal-epidemiologic frameworks linking law to health outcomes; contribute to policy briefs, academic writing, and case law analysis; collaborate on interdisciplinary projects; and assist with grant development and conceptual modeling. CSEL is embedded within Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and is closely aligned with the Health Equity Research Production Model (HERPM), an innovative framework for advancing rigorous, high-impact, and equity-centered scholarship. The lab operates as a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment spanning public health, law, psychiatry, and global research partnerships.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with public health law, epidemiologic research, including literature reviews, protocol development, Constitutional Law and Health Governance, Global Law and Health Equity preliminary data analyses, human rights is a plus. Must be able to independently learn new skills required for project tasks. Must be detail-oriented, with superior organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to always maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy.
