Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is seeking a Marine Science Systems Technician-2. The Marine Science Systems Technician-2 (MSST-2) assists with technical/electronics support and maintenance for seagoing science missions at LDEO and at sea onboard the academic research vessel, R/V Marcus G. Langseth. Monitors hardware performance and provides input into discussions on equipment upgrades/replacement. When assigned on board the ship for science missions, this person serves as a shift leader (under the direction of senior staff) during Langseth science operations. As shift leader, responsible for logging events for the various data recording systems on Langseth, training of science party members in watch-standing duties and contractor management. The MSST-2 must follow quality and safety procedures and be capable of leading science missions if required.


  • Works with the technical team to support electronic and electro-mechanical equipment (for example: multi-channel streamer systems, sound source systems, navigational systems, hydrographic systems, hydraulically-powered winch systems, IT networking, etc.) - functioning primarily as an onboard technician.  Assists with the deployment and recovery of the research equipment. Performs maintenance and repair of electronics components, mechanical components repair/replacement of research/technical and deck equipment.
  • Participates in shipboard experiment support and logistics (primarily equipment shipping) and other requirements as directed. Assists with equipment preparation and shipment.  Assist with on shore logistical support for the LDEO research vessel missions and conducts modifications and upgrades of equipment and software/hardware development of instrumentation to be installed on the vessel.
  • Shore based support at LDEO/OMO for other projects as directed.  Projects would encompass equipment upkeep, equipment storage organization, data reports, mission planning, SurvOPT track projections, etc.
  • Participates in training for furthering candidate’s knowledge of the various data collection systems used on the Langseth.
  • Functions under general supervision by LDEO technical mission leader. Much independent judgment and initiative required. 
  • Non-routine physical activity limited to field assignments.   Receives primary directions from Senior Science Officer. 
  • Assists in training entrance level electronic technicians, and entrance level IT technicians. 
  • Manages 12hr shift onboard the vessel, functioning as assistant to the Senior Technical mission leader.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Engineering, or related scientific field with a minimum of 2-4 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, 8-10 years.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repair of electronics is required. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with various computer operating systems and with computer hardware preferred, familiarity and application of basic IT practices preferred.
  • Familiarity with seismic industry and oceanographic industry equipment and procedures preferred. 
  • Good communication, organizational, and documentation skills preferred.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in dynamic environments as well as the ability to work with diverse methodologies and philosophies encountered when working with science groups from other institutions.
