Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is seeking a Marine Science Systems Technician-1. The Marine Science Systems Technician-1 (MSST-1) serves as a sound source and deck systems Jr. Operator at sea on board the academic research vessel R/V Marcus G Langseth. This incumbent will participate in instrument operation, data collection and data management on all systems throughout the vessel and will maintain shipboard computer network, hardware, and software systems throughout the vessel. The MSST-1 must follow quality and safety procedures.


Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operation of sound source, seismic & scientific systems as directed. Assists with instrument deployment and recovery. Operates related sound source computer systems.
  • Duties could include but are not limited to equipment maintenance on the vessel, general “house-keeping” tasks in the various instrument and science labs on the vessel, inventory keeping, stores loading and other tasks as defined by supervisors.
  • Participates in both the training for and subsequent basic operation of other data collection systems on the vessel.  Knowledge regarding the operation and maintenance of other vessel systems mandatory for career advancement within the technical group.
  • Assists with on-campus work as directed.  These tasks will center on efforts to keep the vessel supported during and prior to science missions which could include but are not exclusive to shipping/receiving processing, documentation control, etc.
  • Reporting to Senior Science Officer or designee, person will have minimal to no supervisory responsibility.  Must demonstrate ability for independent judgment and initiative.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Math, Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline or its equivalent and 0-2 years of related experience required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • The MSST-1 responsibilities require approximately 6 months per year at sea.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of PC and Mac networks is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills highly preferred. 
  • Familiarity with seismic industry and oceanographic industry equipment and procedures preferred. 
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in dynamic environments as well as the ability to work with diverse methodologies and philosophies encountered when working with science groups from other institutions highly desired.
