Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

The College of Dental Medicine (CDM) is a premier dental school, part of Columbia University, and its medical center, preparing highly qualified and talented students and providing high-quality clinical care to patients for over 100 years.  Under the visionary leadership of Dean Christian Stohler, CDM continues its tradition of “leading dentistry where it needs to go” both in preparing students for the profession they will be practicing in and bringing about that future of the profession.  The College brings a distinctive set of strengths to its mission, including:

  • Its location is within the Columbia University Medical Center.  Located in northern Manhattan and predominantly serving patients from the neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Harlem, and the South Bronx, while also drawing patients from across New York City and the region, CDM has the privilege of serving one of the most diverse and vibrant regions in the world.  As CDM delivers care daily to patients, it also confronts the issues of healthcare access and equity and brings long-standing, informed, on-the-ground experience and expertise in addressing these issues.
  • The long tradition of medical-dental integration is central to the College’s identity.  From its founding over a century ago, when the DDS curriculum was integrated with the medical school to prepare students in science and biology, to today when CDM is one of the only dental schools in the country to have its students working in an integrated medical-dental electronic health record, CDM has organized its instruction and care around the understanding that oral health is integral to overall health
  • Its position within a top-tier research institution which supports a rich set of collaborative research opportunities.  In addition to research conducted within CDM, the College also has endless opportunities to collaborate with schools and departments across the university, from biomedical engineering to head & neck cancers, to data science, among many others.  CDM has the ability to bring insights from research back into instruction, clinical care, and the profession itself.
