Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries is currently seeking applicants for the position of Library Assistant V in the Department of Access Services at the Butler Library. Butler Library, the largest of Columbia's libraries, houses collections in the humanities, history, government documents, social sciences, literature, philosophy, and religion. The building also houses numerous service points and special collections, including the Library Information Office, the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and Research & Teaching Support Services.

As a member of the Access Services department, the Library Assistant V will provide library service and assistance at Butler Library’s primary service points during regularly scheduled shifts and other shifts as assigned.


Responsibilities

  • Provide email, phone, and in-person customer service at primary points to faculty, students, staff, administrators, and visitors in a fast-paced environment.
  • Process daily deliveries of library materials.
  • Using faculty-provided course reserves lists, process print, electronic, and media collections for course reserves.
  • Assist in assigning, revising, and training general assistants (student employees).
  • Open and close Library Information Office, circulation, reading rooms, public staff areas, and staff areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and/or its equivalent and six months’ relevant experience required.
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft (Word, Excel) and Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive) products.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize needs and prioritize identified tasks.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of colleagues and library users.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous experience in academic libraries.
  • Experience using Voyager or other library management systems.
