Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the position of the laboratory manager of the Microbiome & Pathogen Genomics Collaborative Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). This laboratory provides support for microbiome and diverse pathogen sequencing and assists projects from the early design stages to the analysis phase for investigators from across CUIMC.
 
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the experimental work, day-to-day operations of the Center, establishing and enforcing standard operating procedures, maintaining equipment/supplies, training technicians in a variety of laboratory procedures, and
perform required experimental essays among other duties. There are opportunities to perform independent microbiome research projects when sufficient skills are acquired.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee central lab operations and specimen processing for projects using the Microbiome Core.
  • Develop and coordinate implementation of standard operating procedures for the timely, efficient handling and processing of diverse specimens.
  • Perform laboratory work, including sample preparation, DNA/RNA extractions, library preparations, and next-generation sequencing.
  • Perform bacterial culture based work, including drug susceptibility testing of bacterial isolates.
  • Responsible for training and supervising laboratory technicians and laboratory assistants.
  • Work with and assist post­doctoral fellows and faculty members in their research.
  • Assist with implementation of laboratory assays and purchasing of equipment.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintain communication between the laboratory and clinics to ensure efficient work flow.
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with Federal, State, Local agency and University regulations.
  • Maintain operations manuals and equipment service agreements, as well as laboratory supply inventories.
  • Assist in preparation of laboratory budgets as they pertain to clinical protocol.
  • Performs additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and computer skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, manage multiple projects and interact with staff at all levels
  • Able to work as a team member with strong communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with microbiology / microbiome related work
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA and RNA isolation, and cloning,
    RNAseq, TnSeq
  • Experience in bacterial stain isolation and genotyping

Other Requirements

  • Participation in the medical surveillance program
  • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
