Position Summary

The Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks to hire a genetic counselor interested in the genetics and genomics of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal dementia, prion diseases, and movement disorders.


Responsibilities

This Genetic Counselor will oversee a variety of clinical and research activities, including patient/family education, pre- and post-test counseling, coordination of testing, and support services.  The genetic counselor will be involved in multiple research studies including the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer’s Network (DIAN) and ALLFTD international and national studies respectively, as well as participating in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the Columbia Centers of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease.  In both clinical and research roles, the genetic counselor will work closely with the vibrant genetic counselor community here at Columbia University.  Columbia University has a graduate Genetic Counselor program; the incumbent will have the opportunity to provide clinical supervision of students and other possible opportunities for involvement with the program down the road. The genetic counselor will also have the opportunity to pursue their own innovative ideas.


Minimum Qualifications

-Board certified as a Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).

-Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required pllus 4 years related experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling. While experience with neurodegenerative diseases is not a pre-requisite, it is preferred. This position involves significant psychosocial counseling, thus an understanding of the family dynamics involved with these diseases is helpful and excellent interpersonal skills are a must.
